When i do water changes do i dechlorinate the water in the bucket first, and then add it to the tank. or can i add it to the tank and then put dechlorinate in.

you can do it, either way. just dose for the tank volume, not the amount you change, when adding to the tank. its how many of us do it. and is perfectly safe.

Hello. We all have our ways of doing this. I stand my buckets for two days. After 24 hours I add the de chlorinator/anti chloramine. At the time of adding to tank, a kettle of boiling water goes into the bucket to bring it up to similar temperature to tank. Test by feel.

I stand the buckets cos I am happier with it that way. Water straight from the tap seems so brutal. The fish are happy too ! You will get the hang of it and find your own way.

indeed we do. i put water straight into the tank, and don't even heat it. unless the change is over 30% (and then i use the tap again, only hot). and my fish love water change time.
what i can say, with absolute certainty, is there is no NEED to let water stand. the de-chlorinator will do the job fine, in fresh tap water.
but, in the end, its what you are most comfortable with.

i do a 25 to 40% water change weekly and i always put the dechlorinater in the bucket before i top up my tank

chloramines don't evaporate under normal circumstances. Technically, neither does chlorine: "gasses off" or "diffuses away" are more accurate technically. But, the bigger point is that chloramine is a very stable molecule, and won't gas off at normal temperatures and pressures. That's a primary reason they are used by water companies so frequently now.

However, the ammonia oxidizing bacteria can consume the amine potion of chloramine, leaving chlorine that can then gas off. Also, there is good evidence that water conditioner isn't really needed at all. We had a few good threads about this a while back. I can help you find them if you want.
