Water Changes

Hi guys, when doing a 50%+ water change are there any tips for heating the clean water thats going in the tank. Filling 6 or 7 buckets and waiting for room temperature to help doesnt work. i know you can get away with putting some cold water in because of the temperature of the existing water in the tank, just wondered if anyone had any ideas

If you're doing a 20% or less water change don't bother, theres no need to heat it, if its a 50% just get it so it's just under, no need to get it spot on.

is it okay to add boiled water is that not changing the qualities of the water

I use the shower and set it to the right temp

Or try adding a little bit of boiling water to cold/room temp water.

Just match it the best you can with your finger straight from the faucet. Hows those nitrites going?

Yeah, add a little hot water from the faucet. Like the others have said, you don't need to be exact, just close.

Yeah why are you not useing tap water that's warm? I use the bath fill up buckets with warm water I also use my hand to check the temp and it is normaly right on. I made a python so I just turn my sink on get it warm and to the right temp hook up and fill.

I don't understand why you would have to use cold water?

I add boiling water to a big bucket with cold water, and that seems to do it. I dont know about all you people, but im on rainwater, so i dont worry about chlorines etc, but if you just get warm water from the tap, not sure about you but for me it goes through like a hot water cylinder, and when it goes through that its picking up a whole lot of metals etc that are bad for water.

It depends on your hot water heating setup. Gravity fed from a tank in the loft is generally bad, debris gets in there. Constantly recirculating water that is used to heat the house as well as supply hot water isn't much better, it will pick up metals & such from the heating unit. These two are mainly found in the UK.

The standard setup in the US is a free standing hot water unit, under pressure, heated with gas or electricity. These are safe to use hot water from, they have been fiberglass lined for years. I don't know how common these are in the UK, but if you have one of these the hot water will be fine for aquarium use.

Hi erk628 date=23 jan 2010- midnight. Did test this evening everythings at 0.PH=8.0 looks good. I wasnt sure about adding hot water into the tank, thought id ask you guys to be on the safe side.

I'm glad to hear that it looks like your tank has finished its cycle congrats!

Not if you have a new style hot water heater

I would guess that it is a new one though because i had my house built about 2 years ago. Well i live in NZ, dont know about water heaters here, all i know is that its bad for my fish to get hot water from the tap.

Were not well at least some of use are not suggesting using straight hot tap water. I use my tub I have a hot and a cold handle I adjust the temp until it feels like my tank water then I put some conditioner in the bucket and put the bucket in the tub and fill it up. Usually I just leave the water running while I take the bucket to the tank so I don't have to adjust the temp again.
