Water changes in new tank?

You should run the old filter sponge and new together (jam them in if needs be) or cut it in half and do that so you change half at a time. Saying that I never change mine, too much like hassle. All you are doing is taking out the good bacteria, it doesn't need changed until it is literally falling apart.

As for the cycling, gravel will help a lot. :) Consider cutting the media up or just squishing it in, it will still run ok. Are you using amonia to cycle? If you have put old gravel in now but no fish/amonia source in the good bacteria will die very quickly.

Everyone this is a clear case of stupidity. All us ppl do reasearch on our tanks eventually wen we relise that the fish arn't suposed to die so soon. U have clearly not gathered any info on doing a cycle. How could u add fish into an uncycled tank and BETTAS they are not tough enouth.

water change 10% every 2days till ur tank is cycled and then 25% every 2 weeks or 10% every week. and also move some of the old filter media into the new filter.

Hello??

"A clear case of stupidity" You can't just call me stupid without knowing the whole story!! That's really rude of you!!

I asked in the Betta section if it would be alright to have 1-2 in the tank and was assured that would be fine that they wouldn't add much to the bio load.

I'm sorry I am not as educated as you are about fish I guess I just assumed the whole idea of this forum was for people to come and get help from others who have more experience. At least I am on here asking questions.

You know I have researched but I'm not an expert. I like to learn is that so bad?

And by the way I have a lot of live plants in the tank so they are going to help with the ammonia. I have been testing the water and all the readings have been fine. I have put in 2 cups of old gravel from my mature tank. I am not feeding much so the fish arn't producing a lot of waste either! :grr:

Hi Dana, :)

I'm going to check and see if the filter sponges are the same size and if they are I'll put half and half in each tank.

No I don't think I'll need to buy any of these sponges for a long while they are quite strong and rinse out well.

I'm not using ammonia to cycle I have 2 Bettas in there so the bacteria shouldn't die. I also have a piece of drift wood in there from my old tank so I'm sure thats helping too.

Thanks for your help!

OK ur got a point so i'm sorry but cycling a tank is a very basic consept run the filter without fish for about a week. Anyways i'm just really fustrated about the amount of ppl that ask about the most basic of things the "home site of this page tells u all u need to know. It's not that difficault to look.

And ur filters don't need to match u could just cut it in to smaller pices and put them in ur new filter it works just as well.

To be honest you sound like you don't understand cycling yourself. Cycling is NOT carried out by running the filter for a week.

Im sure you bettas will be fine Elisabeth, if you have established filter media to add to their tank, which you do. :)

Tropjunky I have read the cycling section on this forum a few times I just needed some additional help.

I just don't think you needed to vent on me it was really unfair and to be quite honest really hurt my feelings. If your that upset with people asking the same questions post something about it with links to the information. Maybe people are unaware of certain sections on the site.

Thanks Danio and clutterydrawer

And thats what these forums are for anyway - to help each other :) Otherwise it would have just been a website with an FAQ section !!!

We dont mind your questions Elisabeth83 :)
