Previously had coldwater fish, and how one goldfish survived 5 years is beyond me, looking at how I used to clean out the tank, I used to net my fish and put them in an old mop bucket which I kept for the fish, clean the whole tank with domestos including driftwood, gravel and filter sponge  and then fill the tank up with dechlorinated water from the tap.

Now I have 155l Osaka which I've cycled and I still do water test every 3 days, but I'm still confused when it comes to changing the water:-

1. Do you need to stand the water for 24hours before putting in the tank(Nutrafin Aqua plus added)?
2. Can I use warm water from the tap to bring up the temperature?
3. How long should I wait between putting the water in (I use a 3pt jug), as I've read you need to add the new water slowly?

Pls advise

when i do water changes i normally use hot and cold water to bring it up to a rough temp and add api stress coat + to remove the chlorine then just float something on the water in the tank and pour the water onto it.

1. No, you can add water to your tank right away, there is absolutely nothing beneficial to the water letting it sit for 24 hours.

2. Yes, you can use warm water from your tap. You do not need to heat up cold water in a kettle.

3. You can add the water right away.

-I just fill up a bucket and then after I put the correct amount of water dechlor in, I just pour it straight into the tank.

Added comments:
1. "back in the day" when water authorities all used just chlorine, you could just refill your container after your water change and leave it under the sink for next weeks water change. By then (actually overnight) all the chlorine would have gassed out and this was a way to save money on buying conditioner. Nowadays most places use chloramines, so you've got to use conditioner. Besides, its cheap and it does other good things.

2. Some people worry that their household hot water sits around exposed to a lot of copper or other metals and will have trace contents of these too high (this is in the hot water only.) Most feel that modern water systems are largely free of this problem. I, like many other members, use my hot water tap to match up my tap water to my tank temp.

Bonus comment: Have you checked out the devices called "Pythons?"

Thank you for your replies

I was too  to ask my local fish supplier although he has been in the same shop for 25 years, so he's probably been asked this numerous times

Once again thank you :)

Actually, when it comes to hot water in my fish makeup, I always run the water on the hot side until it is as hot as it will get and I run the cold until the temperature stops dropping. By that time I figure that any water that has been laying in the pipes picking up copper has been flushed through the system and it is safe to use the water that comes in from the mains and that has been sitting in my fiberglass lined water heater. The flush only takes less than 30 seconds on each side and I consider the insurance well worth the wait.
