Hi,
Just a quick question that you guys might be able to advise me on.

As I mentioned in my other thread, I am expecting to get my 80L Boyu/Orca MT-50 tank today.

I had planned to place it on my kitchen worktop, in front of a couple of wall mounted plugs. Due to the width of the worktop, the back of the tank will be pretty close (maybe an inch) from the sockets.

Would that be considered dangerous, at all?

Yeh my tanks are near sockets too, just make sure you have got drip loops as always and be careful not to spill water down the back of the tank :)

I personally, do not consider that dangerous, but then again, I don't go splashing water over the back.

It is dangerous from the point of view that you could splash water on the wall, it could go down to the plugs, somehow soak the plug itself so that you could electrocute yourself if you then went and grabbed it with a wet hand.. but it's more likely that if the plug got that wet, it would short out the circuit and the switch in the fusebox would flick. Also, I always dry my hands well before going to the plugs and if I see any water on them, I dry them too.

Yeah its all common sense, have drip loops where possible, dont splash water over the sides and dont touch things with wet hands :)

I would actually consider it dangerous, but then i've seen someone get a buzz from a wet socket and escape death by the skin of his teeth. Wouldnt happen in my house :)

I would considerer it dangerous. but, as stated, it how careful you are that counts.
240v can, and does, kill. and you only need a few drops.
sure putting it there does not mean you will die. but it does mean its possible.
having it, nowhere near, the sockets. makes it, virtually, impossible.
question is, which is the less dangerous option?

though my tank is nowhere near the sockets. all the extensions, and therefore the plugs, are in a water tight container. (ok so if the living room fills up to a level of 10 inches. it may make it in to the hole where the cables enter :hyper: )

Oh, I've already set it up in front of the sockets and filled it with water.

Perhaps I should move it further down the worktop, even if that means emptying it out.

Excuse my ignorance, but what is a "drip loop"?

lol, i have no idea. well i do, but dont know for a fact.
my guess? make sure th cable gets lower than the socket, at some point in its run. water cant, usually, go up hill.

Yes, those two are correct: a drip loop is the power cable being lower in one place than the sockets. If you every buy any new equipment, it often has a diagram included.

Drip loop, bish bash bosh, the jobs a good un.

As long as a wee bit of common sense it used it should be a problem.
When having wet hands don't be pushing in or pulling out electric sockets.

Some people have major issues about tanks being so close to electric sockets they extend their cables from filters and heaters. I haven't and wouldn't.

lol, to be honest i agree. but having several very expensive clippers and pliers with huge chunks just melted away. gives you a different view. its only when you see the power of uncontrolled electricity. that you really appreciate its dangers.
to me, its just not worth the risk. however small.
lets face it. you have virtually no chance of winning the lotto (14million-1) but somebody does, usually.
and "IT COULD BE YOU!" lol.
