Hi. Im new to this forum as well as wanting to start my own fresh water tank. I was wanting to go with a 10 gallon tank, possibly a 20 gallon tank, but no larger. I am hoping to find some beautiful exotic fish that can live together in a tank so small and was wondering if anyone had any ideas. I am a big fan of the angelfish, but dont have the room for a tank large enough for them to live in. Are there any good websites i should check out for information and/or images? Please get back to me if you have any good ideas. I am from southern Indiana in the U.S. if that helps at all.

Hi there if it is possible I would get the 20 gallon as it gives you a lot more options for what you can have in your tank. Do you have any ideas of what you want to have in the tank? I think if it were my tank I would have a trio of Apistos, these are dwarf cichlids from south America there are many different species the common ones are Apistogramma Cacatuoides, Apistogramma Agazzi, Apistogramma Borelli. Also they would be interesting for you as they have similar behavior to angel fish as they are both cichlids. In a 20 gallon tank I think you should have a 1 Male apisto and then 3 females of the same species, more than one male in a small tank can cause fighting so it makes it easier on the keepers to keep just one male. With these fish you could also have a school of fish like tetras or rasbora. Along with some corydora catfish for the bottom or a small group of very small plecs like bull dog plecs.

Have you read the articles about fishless cycling on here? There are some pinned topics that I think you should read before you set up your tank :)

Hope thats helped Wills
