wanted floaters, got floaters and ... horned nerites?

I don’t think nerites eat all different kinds of algae, only the softer ones.

My nerites and ottos don’t touch any hair algae’s, but I dropped a piece of blanched zucchini in, and the nerites destroyed it,I only have 2 in my 20 long
It’s fine I only have brown algae and they like it!

Yeah I wouldn't worry. I have never fed my Nerite and he just eats all the algae and he is perfectly fine.

The shells will not heal when they are damaged. The shells have 2 layers and outside protective protean layer smilar to hair or finger nails. the protean layer will not regrow once damaged or after it has been abraded away. Under the outer layer is rest of the shell which is mainly calcium carbonat.

The calcium carbonate layer will not regrow. It is mainly damaged by acidic water with a ph of 7 or less. Calcium carbonate only dissolved in acidic water So IF you PH is above 7 thedamage will not get ay worse. But even if your PH is fine there may be a small amount of acid present that could cause damage. I have found that as plants consume fertilizer any excess sulfate or chloride (note plants need sulfur and chlorine to grow. Same with animals. However Chlorine gas is harmful while a chloride salt is safe). even if the water PH looks fine. there may be a small amount of acid present in the water.

So it is really important to know your water PH and GH levels. All plants and animals have a substantial amount of calicium. So if the snails have enough to eat they should have enough calcium.

The cuttlebone added to your tank is mainly calcium carbonate. it is very hard and snails cannot eat it. However it does react and neutralize acids However i have found it is not very effective in neutralizing acids just sitting on the substrate of the tank. It works much better if it is in the filter were the water flows the highest.

Nerites mainly consume cyanobacteria. They cannot eat hard green spot algae and have a hard time getting hair algae into their mouths. They will consume any dead leaves or plant mater especially soft vegetables. dried seaweed is also a good food.

My Nerite snail eats just about anything. Algae, fallen fish flakes, pleco pellets, Cory pellets, etc.

I would recommend occasionally dropping one or two algae wafers in there, just to tide him/her over.
