I posted a few days ago that my tanks have been cycling well... then suddenly seemed to stop. No drop in amonia for 3 days when it had previously been processing it to zero in 12 hours. I got lots of helpful suggestions for what may have been causing it.

However, it seemed too coincidental to me that both tanks had this issue the day after I tried to add an "instant cycle" product to help speed up the process. So, I did a bit of searching and found that people claims that these products cause false positive results of amonia and nitrite. Another forum said that the amonia remains in the water but in a form that is not harmful to the fish. I hope that it can still be consumed by the bacteria because I didn't add any amonia for 3 days because I kept getting false positive readings.

Yesterday I did about a 70% water change on both tanks but still got a positive amonia reading of 1. I doubted that result so I added a little.

I really want to get this stuff out of my tanks! Will it gradually disappear? I'm not quite sure how much amonia to add daily because my readings are off. Prior to adding this stuff my amonia was processing quickly and my nitrites were 5+ for about a 10 days. Thanks!

well, imagine its a fish in cycle tank, the fish are likely to produce the same ammount of ammonia daily, so just carry on dropping the same amount in that you have been every day...as long as the bacteria can be fed it should carry on cycling no?

Yes, but my biggest worry is if this stuff converts amonia to another form...one that is not harmful to the fish, could it also be a form that the bacteria can not feed off of? I feel like I was finially approaching the end of cycling. Don't want to have to start over.

well if you can be a little more descriptive of the product, such as who makes it, what is it called then and how much you added then we might be able to help a little more.

lol, another "highly" successful Placebic Cycling product. avoid them like the plague, useless money sapping rubbish. i wish i could be more helpful, but you cant make a product work, when it cant.

It was called Smart Start Instant Cycle. Can't find it online because I can't remember the company name. I have no interest in making the stuff work...just want to get it out of my water. Actually, seems I may be back on track today aftere the big water change.

Hmm, Im currently cycling my tank and this has made me consider stopping the Interpet Filter Start Ive been putting in every 2 days (as on the instructions).
Think I'll leave that and just stick to the ammonia from now on!
