It looks like limestone, is it limestone? or what is it?

all my rocks limestone and that doesnt look anything like it.

wolfs rock thread should help you ID it.

When I asked about the stone, I was talking about the stone that mark had collected in his picture. The stone in the pots on my cooker is old red sandstone. Mark limestone is not necessarily crumbly or brittle, in fact it can be downright tough to break. From the look of your rock, “I am no geologist now” but I’d say it is a sedimentary rock classed as a tillite, this has a compacted structure of smaller (tiny) particles (of other sedimentary rock usually limestone) constructed at various angles and bound together, colour varies from brown to grey to greenish black. I think that is should be ok in the tank.

Got the info out of a book called Minerals, Rocks and fossils by W.R. Hamilton (very nice book actually lot of pictures)

I have some ocean rock that I have just taken out of my 6ft tank, I have 5 large pieces some smaller, and tons of tuffa rock. I had the big stuff layed on the bottom and then layed all the tuffa rock across the top of it. heres a photo of one of the big pieces and the only thing I can put next to it to give you some idea of size is a 18"x12"x12" fish tank.

Sweet mother of god and every thing holy. May the blessings of the lord be upon us, that is one big lump of a rock. I thought it looked big in the other picture with the tv as scale, but the fish tank makes it look massive and you say you have five of them. I am impressed. About which, do you have many tanks just lying around the house still in the wrapping. If you do I think you might really need to talk to someone about your MTS, as you have it bad!!!!!!!!!! :) :)

yes, i would boil any kind of rock before you put it in to your tank.

Based on what you have posted earlier about boiling all your rock, can you post a picture of the pot you used to boil those big pieces!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That must be one big pot and I'd like to see it . !!!!
:shifty: :shifty: :shifty: :shifty: :shifty:

LOL, I must admit that when I said that, it did cross my mind that someone may ask to see the pot, very good tanks a lot. I do have a lot of new tanks laying around, all still in the wrapping, 6 of them. I also have a 101 gallon tank and a 75 gallon tank, both in the garden and awiting for me to build a solid shelving unit. IF YOUR GOING TO HAVE AN INTEREST IN SOMETHING, THEN DO IT PROPER. lol.

IF YOUR GOING TO HAVE AN INTEREST IN SOMETHING, THEN DO IT PROPER. lol.

Do you have a plan for all those clearseals? or are they simply just backup tanks or going to be turned into sumps for the bigger tanks in the garden?

hi mate. I plan on setting myself up a fish room with 11 tanks or so, plus I have a few tanks scattered around in various rooms. I bought those clearsil with the idea of putting the holding females in plus any young fish that i will sell on. theres not much in the way of malawi cichlids were I live and ive had to drive hundreds of miles for my little collection. could open up a pet shop with the fish and birds that I have. :good:

right rocks are cleaned and done and im just about to put them in and do the tank so in a few hours ill post some new pics.

its all done and here is the finished article i couldnt add the salousi i added him in first and the lab in last and still the lab bullied him. Well he are the pics of the finished tank.
It went from this.

Yes I like it It was worth the effort, the rock looks more uniform and natural now. There looks to be plenty of hiding places as well.

Have you left a gap at the back or are the rocks balanced up against the glass at the back of the tank ?

bit of both mate it kinda comes down and out so the fish have a good half of the tanks height behind there if you get me in laymans terms theres tonnes of space behind there lol

I think that is fantastic budd, well worth your effort and I dont think you could improve on that, unless you go BIGGER! when are you getting your 10ft tank. LOL

lol when im out the army once my baby is born my 155g will be turned in to something special.

Looks great, really really grate. I think if I was a cichlid I would want a house like that. I’m very impressed with the whole effect and the economics seem to be even better.
Put your hand up it you love free rock.

Can I make one suggestion, it’s only a small one but I think it might add to the effect of your all ready fantastic tank? What would you think of removing the existing background and using a background of all one colour? If you used all black for instance it would not only make the fish “pop” out with colour but it would also give the rock a far more three dimensional look exaggerating the “nooks and crannies”. Also it would help to hide your internal filter. It just a suggestion and please note I think you tank looks great as is.
