Very Small Amount Of Nitrite In Tank - How Much Is Too Much?

Having tested the tap water, I've found the nitrate content is about 10 ppm, so I guess 20 ppm in the tank water isn't as bad as I thought.

Honestly 40ppm is not a problem for most fish, you are doing sufficient water changes, I wouldnt worry about it too much, with 10ppm out of the tap you are never going to get it that low unless you have a substantially planted tank.
