How do you go about disconnecting and cleaning the filter??

I noticed that when i pushed down on the button to prime it obviously some of the water drained from the tank through the pipes and into the filter. When u turn off and unclip the top/powerhead does that water go back through the pipes and back into the tank or does it stay in the filter?

Reason i ask is that when the water level dropped i topped it back up again with more water so if the water does drain back into the tank when it comes to disconnecting the filter my tank will probably overflow
