Is there any reason not to use foam sold for pond filters in an external filter? I can't see why not personally and its allot cheaper than the ones sold for aquarium filters.
There's no reason why not; as you say they're much cheaper. Just make sure that you cut it slightly bigger rather than smaller so the water can't bypass it round the sides

Thanks, The LFS sells foam labelled for aquarium at £10 for a 10" x 10" sheet, but do a pack of 3 (fine, medium, course) 16" x 12" sheets of pond filter foams for £11 lol
