while I assume most aren’t actually “eating” the sponge filters, most of my grazers, from neocardia shrimp, through the “algae eaters” including plecos, up to my kisser gourami all really like to graze the sponge filters, very little grazing on my hang on back filters by comparison… almost seems like every tank should have a sponge filter , just as an available food source… I do have tanks with both filter types, and the foam is hands down grazed more than any of my other filters… thoughts???

There are some species reported to have eaten sponge filters. The diet isn't good for them. i'd watch the kissing gourami as they have a reputation for eating some very tough foods.
Most aren't species I've kept - mostly large Central American Cichlids.

It's feeding on micro-organisms. I use sponge filters in tanks where I breed parental care dwarf cichlids. The parents take the young directly to the best grazing areas, and just because we can't see the food, they can. Air driven sponge filters, like clumps of java moss type plants are extremely popular targets.

I’m starting to rethink my use of sponge filters with all the talk about microplastics . I just may go back to the old box filters and UGF . Another thing about sponge filters is when you take one out of service and it dries out . Something changes and they aren’t quite right after that .
