i think you'll have to ask a mod or admin

It's admins who can change user names, but you need to have a good reason.

I'm a hacker running away from the FBI ... Nah, after talking with Fishmanic ive decided to just keep it.

I changed my name from essjay to Essjay because everyone spelled it with a capital E anyway. And it was allowed because it's recognisably the same name.

Ah ok. Yah, it would just be easier if I stuck with this. I was going to change it to my first name but Fishmanic brought up that I have a LOT of posts and I may not be recognized. And when I found out that mods had to change it... I just didnt want them to go through the trouble.
