can you list the types of medications that you use in the states please and what they cure, im aware that their are some different meds that you use that side of the pond to those used in the UK, it may not be many but im curious to hear about them :good:

meliafix, pimafix, all the maracyns(heavy duty antibacterials-positive negative internal, anti fungus and anti parasites), a few of the jungle brand products are useful, their antibacterial and anti parasitic foods can be used right along with the heavier duty meds, and quick cure for ich and other parasites.

though I tend to not try the simple stuff as a first line of defense, if something looks bacterial I jump right to the heavy duty stuff. I have never needed the pimafix I have and the meliafix seems to be only good at helping fins grow back a little faster.

what do you use pimafix for? I have it but cant remember why I got it in the first place.

the lfs that i work at likes to sell furan, which is apparentlly like the peniccillen of the fish world, cure-all kind of thing, but i never use it, its too hard on the fish i think.
i use melafix alot tho. (when needed of course :p )

Furan contains nitrofurazone. It is a very good fix for most illnesses...especially hex. Linda Olsen treats all her fish with it in cycles and has noticed a drastically lower death rate among them due to illness. I don't find it to be harsh on the fish at all. In fact, they don't act any differently. Of course, I use nitrofurazone directly and not Furan.

Oh and dont forget tetracycline, which treats gram-positive and gram-negataive.

I like using Maracyn 1 & 2. Very good meds.
I have melafix, but I've never used it w/ my bettas. I'm just too paranoid about using it with them. I've never had a problem w/ them growing back their fins anyway though so really no point.

I've also used a General Cure (anti-parasite med) when I thought my tanks had velvet.

I've also used tetracycline, but I hate using the stuff. I only use it as a last resort when maracyn didn't work. It discolors the water (makes it look like the fish are swimming in tea, then eventually soda the longer it sits in the tank) and if you have anything that makes bubbles, a nasty purple foam builds up at the surface that is a pain in the butt to clean.

Also have some triple sulfa. Used it shortly in one of the tanks when it looked like the fish might be coming down w/ columnaris (they weren't... it was just a few missing scales)... and it didn't seem to affect the fish in any negative way.

I also have Jungle Fungus Clear. Makes the water green, but I think it works pretty well and it's cheap.
