Urinating In The Tank

oh that has just made my day lmao.
i know have this mental image in my head of some bloke stood on a chair peeing in a tank lol
either that or a wonman trying to squat over a tank

When I first looked at this thread, I thought it was an emergency post on someone urinating during a drunken party. But, I see that it is not about that.

You are being totally serious and debating the effectivness of urine as an alternative ammonia source for cycling tanks.

I think I'll stick to adding a lot of plants. I read the article, and it's very informative. I just don't think I'm ready for the next step.

Human urine, as mentioned in the article, has very little ammonia and is predominantly urea and creatinine. Fortunately for us, and perhaps not for the fish, other chemicals and contaminants in our body are also excreted via the urine. One of these, for example, is antibiotics. Personally, I would avoid this method. SH

Ok so there still isn't really a set answer on weather or not its worth it.

But where does one purchase pure ammonia.

Oh and i dont know who said it, but i never said there was bacteria in urine, or that it added bebeficial stuff to the water.
i said due to the fact that urine contains more than just ammonia, would this not cause other benefical bacteria to grow in the tank to remove these other "toxins" present in urine, things which would not be present in ammonia only??

anyway this is an interesting thread, for many reasons :)

:D I am amused to be reading this thread,as my man and I discussed this topic in great length a couple of years ago.
We decided against the method, but its great to see other peoples opinions on the idea!!

But where does one purchase pure ammonia.

You don't need PURE ammonia, it was already discussed. You can get it in the cleaning aisle at the grocery store. It's ammonia solution, and is around 9% ammonia. Even a few drops of this in 50 gallons of water is enough to cycle a tank.

That was exactly my first thought! Haha!
This is really kool though. I had never thought about using urine before, although it should be completely obvious. And since it's going into an aquarium (especially if it were a large one), I don't think there would be a smell. It wouldn't have the same effect as, say, piddling on the carpet.
Great idea!

uhhh dude.... piddling on the carpet stinks :D

I know you dont need pur ammonia, but thus far the only stuff i could find has scents and crap in it.
but i read that walmart might have some on a thread here, but that might be US only.

This thread is really wacky and amusing :D I cant imagine doing a water change after this.... considering that most people seem to suck to start the suction.

:hyper: :hyper: :hyper: :hyper: :hyper: :hyper:

just thinking there you are peeing in tank when someone walks in an you say with dead pan face oh come in i'm just cycling my tank

considering that most people seem to suck to start the suction.

LOL that would soon stop I imagine.

Strange really when it's all the same. You don't tend to think of it as sucking up fish piss, but that's what the vast majority of us do it was shown in a recent poll.
