Hi, I am new to this and need help in identifying fry that I have found in my tank... well, 5 of them. We already have 2 baby platy that we found in the tank a few weeks ago, but after watching the fish in our main tank today we saw something else. To describe them they look similar to a sting ray shape and are practically see through but have a black speckled pattern on top of them. They appear to be scurrying like a albino cory however we have not had these in the tank for a long time. Just wanted some help trying to identify these guys. Would appreciate any help or advice.

We had a tragic loss of our fish the other week and lost all of the ones we had in the tank at the time. However since then we have cleaned the whole tank and started from scratch and now in our tank we have 6 platy and 2 fantails.

that describes flukes to a T.

flukes are a parasite that can be detrimental to all fish if left unchecked.
sorry for your losses but at least you have the knowledge that next time you see them you
can do something before it is too late.

We put several in a breeding net with the platy fry but they are so small we've found about 7 but how the hell do i sort my tank out ? Any advice would be appreciated

to kill the flukes with a 10 to 30 minute bath in 10 mg per liter of potassium permanganate, or treat the whole tank with 2 mg per liter

Flukes are parasites that attach to the bodies of fish, especially the gills. Although flukes can cloud the skin color, the parasites do not usually produce a visually noticeable effect. The most common evidence of flukes it based on the behavior of the fish. They will brush quickly against a rock or abrasive surface in an attempt to scratch the fluke from their body. A salt bath may be effective using 4 ounces of aquarium salt per 10 gallons. Also consider Prazipro by Hikari or Anti-Fluke by Aquarium Products.

I agree with walkers,if they are flukes they're normally seen on the fish and not in the water...

Are you sure they're not fantail fry??

Any chance of a pic?

Do not kill anything until you know what it is. A photo would help. Are they definitely a fish? What sort of size are there? Where do they like to hang out?

Kinda sounds like a hillstream loach but no idea how that would have got into the tank!

If you've had problems with your fish and as you say you're new to this, check this link out - it has all the basics of fishkeeping and a lot of stuff that isn't covered in books or told by pet shop workers/other fishkeepers. There have been so life-saving advances in the last decade or so and unfortunately they've not yet worked themselves into the general fishkeeping conciousness yet, despite literally dealing in life and death for the fish.

Hi
I would of taken a picture but they are so small they dont even show up on a photo, They are almost see through you can just see slight black markings on top they buzz about all over the tank (Like Corys??) i've not once noticed any hiding up where the fry tend to go.
We have proberly had the worst luck with fish ever its quite a long story but i think it's the only way to work out whats going on if i tell you our trouble.

We started off with
1 Black Moor
1 Fantail Goldfish
1 Shubunkin

The water cycle was left with this for a week then we added

1 Double Sword
1 Platy
1 Red Tailed Shark
1 Molly (Appeared to be hiding up possibly pregnant or ill, no visible symptoms in shop when bought)

After a few weeks we gradually started adding others

4 Corydoras Pictus Cats (Albino)
1 Double Sword
1 Ghost Knifefish
1 Kulhi Loach
1 Clown Loach (Viscious #29### not a fan of black moor)
1 Kribensis
1 Golden Gourami
Various cardinals and danios (Including Zebra Danios)
3 Platy
3 Mollies

At various times during the 2 MONTHS i lost practically all my fish with most going back to the shop because they were constantly stressing out other fish
if they didnt go back to the shop they died

These fish died while in the tank
1 Molly
1 Zebra Danio

These fish were returned to the shop either for attacking or because they just didnt seem compatable as they were getting so stressed
1 golden gourami
1 kribensis
1 siamese fighter
1 ghost knifefish
1 kuhli loach
1 clown loach
1 red tailed shark

About a month ago i came through one morning to find black moor and fantail struggling and alot of other fish hiding up several were at the top dead.
As i took out the dead fish more were coming out of hiding and dieing at the top
following one hell of a morning i was left with only
1 Black Moor (Who recovered from getting ripped to shreads by a clown loach)
1 fantail Goldfish (stopped spazing but still to this day goes a bit spazzy if he surprises himself)

Following this i removed the remaining fish to another tank and put a solution my local fish shop gave me into the water
Since then i decided i'm sick of all the trouble so ill keep my 2 goldfish with 2 canary goldfish (I had done it before with no problems)

They attacked fantail for babies and eventually a canary died of whitespot the other died with no visible problem

I then treated the water with white spot treatment

while they were in the tank i noticed a small fry (Didnt look any older than a few days in the back corner, since it had been a week since a tropical fish was in the tank i was surprised but i took it out and placed it in a seperate tank and eventually i had 2 fry in 1 tank and now black moor and fantail in the main tank

As the fry have got older i have realised they are infact platy fry (How the hell they lived through all that i dont know)

After a week of just fantail and black moor in main tank i added 6 Platy and a breeding net into the main tank with the fry in it
This is when i noticed these weird things buzzing around
NO FISH TRY TO EAT THEM !!
The platy have been attacking fantails coat so black moor and fantail are no out in another tank and i just have 6 platy and the 2 fry in main tank

I cannot get how these things appeared but i need definateivce proof what it is i've researched whats been said on this post and it took me to summer flounder which do sound very like what i have

I'm hoping after all this someone can give me ideas i wanted relaxing stunning fish all i've had is hassle
I've had water checks and temperature check throughout all this and i've passed water checks perfect andthe water has stayed at 24 degrees all the while

what size tank is it
and how often are you
doing water changes and
how long as it been up and
running

Its been up and running now about 3 months i'm doing water changes around every 2 weeks a quarter of the water the tank is 18 inch x 18 x 18

Right straight away you can see the issues - you have far far far too many fish. I got confused in the posts, so how many fish are in the 18x18x18 tank?

A basic rules for you to think about though. - Dont mix tropical and coldwater fish (goldfish)

i'm not sure of the stats as they have been done by the shop he said they were fine

We have had all the fish i listed but only because ones died we have never had all of them at the one time

we currently have
2 Platy fry
6 Platy

that is it.

I'm not sure what filter it is it has a funnel into the tank and a grate for water to escape into the back where there are 3 compartments 1 is 2 large filter foam blocks 2nd is like wood tubes and lead looking cartridges and final bit contains the filters pump and filter balls

Hope ive explained a bit clearer
