Unknown Fish In Tank!

Right okay it sounds like you are now in a position to sort this tank out now with the platies in the tank. Prior to this you had a really bad mix of fish, fancy goldfish need very big tanks and common goldfish need to be in ponds really. You also mixed tropical fish and coldwater fish which again is a big no no, the numbers of fish you had were really bad as well there were far to many. And again you had some fish that would vastly outgrow the tank like the ghost knife fish which has a max size of 18 inches same with the clown loach, even the smaller large fish like the red tailed shark which gets to 6 inches is too big.

Right so an 18 inch cube is 25 gallons so thats how we determine the amount of fish you can have and to what size you should go with the fish. All fish will grow to their adult size no matter the type of fish you have, even goldfish.

So with 6 platies and 2 fry you are quite lightly stocked now, after 3 months I would expect your filter to be cycled and with a good amount of bacteria in there now which is good.

With the unidentified floating object - I would post an article in the tropical emergencies section and try to get a pic of them if you can so we can work out what to do.

Once these are sorted you can start to add fish but you have to research how big they grow and if they have the same needs as the fish you have now. So you have tropical fish now so avoid goldfish and read about fish before you buy them so you dont get large growing ones like the black ghost knife fish.

hi woke up to see a platy with raised white spots they look more prominent than white spot so i'm thinking its maybe one of these weird parasites
any ideas?
and what stuff do i need to get to get rid of the problem we only have a shower so i need to keep the fish in the tank really

When you say you only have a shower? Does that mean you would keep them in the bath or something?

If you can post any photographs of your fish it will help us work out what the disease is and what you need to do its pointless us speculating as if you add the wrong medicine on our advice then its possibly more of an issue than if you leave it.

kcolby90, read the stuff in that link I posted. It takes you to a different part of the forum that was designed for beginners or those who need general help with their tank. It's very tempting to simply try to treat the specific symptoms and not worry about the background issues but 99% of the time, it's the background issues like an uncycled tank or too many fish that cause the problems, even diseases and especially stress and deaths.

If anything still isn't clear, post again and we'll help clear stuff up.

I'm not trying to send you off on a wild goose chase or shunt you away with some "basics" that won't help you. I'm serious when I say that the information in that link is often neglected by the people who sell you fish and "advise" you about what stock to have and this can literally cause major problems in the tank that take the guise of other diseases and such. There is so much to tell you that I would basically have to type that entire link up anyway to take you through the basics.

Your post about the different fish in the tank and the deaths and stress they've suffered shows us that there is a big problem with your tank and that you've had awful advice from the people you bought your fish from. It's such a shame that some people will sell an animal and simply look to make money instead of care about the welfare of the animal.
