rena

better than fluval

its better built, has anti-airlock system allows self priming, and is cheaper too

v classic eheim , rena has quick disconnect , leak free , self priming , plus it comes with 2 outlets: a spaybar or a jet flow and , plus, u have a control knob for water flow , plus , is also cheaper and has better water flow

Okiedokie - I'm going to have to pipe up with my "hate Rena XP external filters" - hope you don't mind to have an alternate view :shifty:

Taken from one of my old posts:

Bex & BigIan, I appreciate you are happy rena users. However if you Take the time to read these pages upon pages of reviews (hit the more reviews botton at the bottom of the page) about the Rena filters, you will find a most regular common denominator. You might be the lucky ones. But the reviews from personal users (myself included) speak volumes.

Purely on the first page:

They are not as silent as an Eheim.

Mine is very loud and when I call the 800#, the only solution is to box the entire unit up and send it to them for evaluation (at my expense both ways). This after the dealer I purchased the unit from contacted the distrubutor to find that they have a large batch with bad parts from a subcontractor. I recommend staying with the old and reliable manufacturers like Ehiem and Fluval.
It is easy to maintain, but it is loud.

I also had the humming problem, but luckily, I had another DIY spraybar that is about twice as long, 3 times the number of holes and 3 times the size of holes. This solves the humming problem
So 4 out of 6 reviews just on the first page mentioned the problem :/ It cannot be ignored.

However - I won't deny they have a massive output and are cheap (er).

Lol my made a whistling noise , it was coming from the spraybar , but i fixed it and its pretty quiet...although the oulets and inlets are pretty bulky , thats my only problem with it

Eheim all the way, wouldnt touch anything else.

I have a Rena Xp2 and Xp3 on my 90 gallon Lake Malawi tank and they are wonderful. If the nose from the spray bar is enough for you to get your panties in a bunch then either A. Put the power jet on, B. Drill the holes to a larger diameter, or C. complain, return the Rena, spend 100+ more dollars and have the same thing... oh, but much more silent. I haven't done anything to either or mine and they are wonderful. I never have had a noise problem, but I also wouldn't be one to complain about it. I always recommend them and give them a big A+.

the fluvals self prime too and what makes you say there worse made?

u must have alot of experience with alot of filters to make such bold statements.

I used to own a eheim classic...for me it was terrible , priming sucked big time, Rena is so easy to prime , just attach and thats it , it has been pretty gd to me so far and its quiet

Nah - not the spray bar. The actual filter (and yes - correctly set up). Not panties - Pants.

i've got a classic Eheim and have no trouble priming it... works wonderfully for me :good:

--EDIT--
but neither it nor the media are cheap :X

next time ill get an eheim pro 2...but if this rena performs well, i may get a rena 4 for my other big project...My is so quiet and nice water flow

Maybe I am super lucky, but I don't even notice mine... I never hear a thing...

I must admit the Rena XP3 i have on my display tank is a reasonable piece of kit, it doesnt have as much suck as i would like and leaves a lot of suspended particals in the water but it is quiet and handles the fairly large bioload well enough. I would still only buy Eheim filters though if i was buying a new filter, you just cant beat them.

while were happy with the function of our rena it is a bit noisy. however it's definately better than fluvals!
