Under Feed

Frozen peas work fine. Run them in a tea strainer under a hot tap to defrost, then use a sharp knife to decapsulate them (bin the shell). Chop the inner part up enough so the fish don't choke.

Interesting lol

cool ill give it a go :) better than starving them for a day a week to keep them erm flowing freely lol

Brine shrimp have enough fiber in them to be a relatively good natural laxative too, like the peas that I never use.
Feeding every 2 or 3 days, or even every week is fine when you can't be around to feed the fish regularly. Most of us could also easily survive a week of no food with no ill effects. That is OK when you can't be around to take care of the fish but is not a good long term strategy to care for the fish. Feed them every day or maybe skip a day now and then and your fish will thrive. If you severely withhold food, your fish will not grow properly and will not be in robust good health.

I'm fishing every other day right now just untill I get my nitrites down to 0 I did a fish in cycle so I was trying to keep my levels from steadily growing (which I got them pretty set now) but when my nitrite goes from .50-0 I'm going to feed every day.

I lost 3 Platies becuase my girlfriends little boy emptied half a packet of freeze dried bloodworms into the tank, that coupled with shoving his hand in for giggles....

Are you supposed to cut up the peas? Not wonder they weren't interested! So what are you supposed to do to prepare them?

It would take a hell of a lot longer for you to starve a fish. In the wild, they could go for days (or several weeks) on end without finding any food. Not feeding them for a day or two every week will benefit the water quality, too.

Quite agree, different species have evolved very different eating behaviors. Domestic cows and "sea cows" both eat greens all day long if possible. Humans, although getting a bit more like the cows, are known to sometimes take breaks between the television potato chips and formal meals. Small tropical fish are tiny and opportunistic, surviving easily for long periods between the finding of tiny specs of food.

~~waterdrop~~

I'm still feeding my fish every other day since I'm waiting on the Nitrites to go down and all that good stuff but today I noticed my fish were attacking the algae wafer that I threw in there for the pleco could this be I'm under feeding them? When they did that I cut a brime shrimp cube into half and then gave them a bigger half of that half and they attacked it and it was gone within 5 minutes.

Just a question regarding the cubes you feed your fish.

Im just checking to make sure these are not frozen cubes?

If so. You should never drop those straight into tank as the temperature of the food can give your fish hypothermia.
Its best to defrost them fully first. (I personally use a cup of tank water to get it done quickly)

you may already know this but you cant be too careful :good:

Actually no what I was doing was taking them out the freezer which is outside bringing them inside cutting them in half and then rubbing them with my fingers to break them up whoops

Its quite easy, cook a pea, peel the skin off and either cut it ever so finely OR just break it up for edible sizes for the fish.
:D
I could be wrong, ive only been doing this for 7 / 8 months but thats how i fed my mollies!

Lol, and heres me just nuking them in a mug of water, letting them cool and dropping them in! No wonder the fishies just ignored them!

I let the cube sit out a little this morning and it just floated to the bottom in the current and the fish didn't even notice it untill i shook it up with the net a little
