Un Explained Fish Death

Hi

I had 1 cherry shrimp in my tank. One day i went to my lfs and bought some new plants, placed them in and all was good. the next day i looked in the tank, my shrimp was upside down with 2 4 cm long worms next to it. I decided that the worms came from the new plants i bought. i removed them and was wondering if the worms could have killed the little shrimp?

Is that nitrite reading correct? :crazy:

Or have you mixed nitrate and nitrite up? If you've got 5ppm nitrite I'm not surprised your shrimp died - nitrite acts like carbon monoxide.

However, if you've mixed nitrite and nitrate up and you've got 0 nitrite and 5 nitrate, then your water's fine, in which case I'm not sure. Did you manage to get a picture? Are you sure it was the shrimp, and not the shrimp's old skin? It could have shed it's skin...

it was definately the shrimp. i re-checked my water and i did get them mixed around. :good:

I take it you didn't get a picture? There's a thread somewhere that details all the pest/hitchhikers you can get ni a tank, you might want to have look through that, see if you can identify your visitors?

i looked at it and it looked like the tubifex worms, and around the same length, except they were brown, not red? thinking about it i might have got a pic, if so i will post it asap :good:
