Ok.. this sunday. Doing my Water change i think i emptyed too much water...

around 70% of the water was gone (Woops :() And i added Tap Safe etc.

But Also

I Have a string ray filter... TO be on the safe sdie i asked my dad

"Dad do you have to clean the sponge's in the tank or in the waste water"

He said

"Fish tank waste water"

So i did...

And Today there was a flaming tetra stook to the back of my filter when i pulled the poor soul out it's body LITULY feel appart... also i supsect the other is passing away..

Any suggestions?

(I Have ran tanks before... But this one is fairly new and i stopped looking after them for a couple years)

Nothing wrong with that size water change normally.

And you only need to clean the filter when it's actually starting to get clogged up. But your dad is right that you need to wash in old waste tank water.

Did you cycle your tank before the fish were put in? If so, how did you do it?

What are your water stats at the mo? Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate etc.

I need to get a New Kit My mom threw the other one out by mistake.

And Cylcing

(60 litre Tank)

I First Did what i had to

Add CLEAN gravel

Then I Added water (Obv xD)

then added the filter and turned it on and left it for around 1 week then added my 4 goldfish in to get the tank fully running for a week (They looked so much happyer and nicer in that tank)

They all lived.

And i took them back to my LFS With a water sample ( 5 months back ) and the guy there said it passed so we got 10 neosns and 4 guppys

(Most neons died due to stress the LFS worker cant handle fish to save there lives)

I'll edit tomoz school tomorrow.

Night (Thanks for the help)

The tank wasn't cycled when you put either sets of fish in.

The tetras died due to ammonia poisoning not stress. And I reckon the latest ones are probably dying now due to the fact they were also poisoned.
Ammonia poisoning shortens the length of a fishes life dramatically, but some live longer than others.

Your tank should definitely be cycled by now, but the damage is irreversible. I wouldn't say you have a problem, premature deaths are inevitable. Feel free to replace lost fish, but obviously not too many at a time, otherwise you will overload the filter and subject the new fish to temporary ammonia poisoning aswell.

i'll get a test kit to be sure and i dont realy think the tetra's died of poisioning... The guy at the LFS DID have them out the net for a couple minutes and rougthy put them in the bag...

But i'll do a test to be sure thanks :good:

Something that I think has been missed here is that it is not a new tank, it has been set up for 5 months now. Although it may not have been cycled properly, going forward the next fish should be fine. Fish that have been in the tank during a less than ideal cycle could very well have been harmed by it and could now be dying, but that is the history of the tank, not the future.

Fish sometimes get stuck behind filters, even healthy ones. It happens.

The others are right, your tank was not cycled. You probably started the cycle with the goldfish and the cycle will have ended by now (as this is several months later), but you did put the fish into an uncycled tank at the start. Whatever the shop tells you, you can't cycle a tank by leaving it set up for a week and then adding a few fish for another week. This is called a fish-in cycle and it is very dangerous for fish if not done properly.

The neons are awful starter fish. For some reason lfs think they are great beginners fish, but that has nothing to do with how hardy they are and everything to do with how cheap, popular and small they are. Poor neons.

Anyway. As long as you turned the filter and heater off when doing the water change, there is nothing wrong wityh a 70% water change. You did carefully match the temperature of the new water and add dechlorinator, right?

What are the symptons of the other dying fish?

I Reckon the last flaming tetra is dieing of old age ( due to loss of couler ) and possibly one of my Mollies although she could of just been resting...

And i agree neons ARE hardy and no not a great starter fish after all.

Also my local fish store Tanks have a few dieing fish and apparntly that effects the tank quality etc.So by any chnach could they have been poisioned before joNing my tank?

Will get a test kit ASAP and give out the info others need thanks. :good:

The original fish were all poisoned during the cycling process. The didn't die due to disease per say, and certainly not due to old age. The fish you're referring too should live for at least 2 years under the correct conditions.

Old man is right, and re-itterated the point I tried to make in my first post.
Any fish you add from now on should hopefully be fine, but don't add too many at one time, otherwise you will overload the filter and the new fish will also be affected by ammonia poising which significantly shortens their lifespan.

Ok :D

That is way harsh Curiosity. I am sure that I made similar mistakes when first starting out and had to learn the hard way that what the LFS suggested was not always best for the fish.

Exactly what part was harsh?

The part where I repeated facts to give clarity?

Or the part where I didn't judge past events as they were simply an accident?

Knox didn't think it was 'harsh'.

We Learn from our Mistakes Right?

Exactly :)

The only time people get annoyed is when either the person comes for advice and ignores it (resulting it fish death) or people have very strong opposing views. Often one view is the safer/more reliable/more moral option and the other will be riskier but not without it's success, so obviously both people say they are right, cause technically they both are...and it ends up in an argument  You didn't do any of that at all.

If I was being frank, then it's almost definitely down to your actions that they're dead...it's a shame, but the point is that it was an accident. And like you said, everybody learns from their mistakes. You're certainly in the right place for it! :D

What sort of stocking do you have at the moment?
And what are the dimensions of the tank?

Seeing as the cause of death isn't related to disease you can start restocking straight away. If you wanted any help I'm sure people would be willing to lend a hand.
Just make a new post (so it has the correct title and gets more attention), and answer the questions I listed on it.

Maybe mention what types of fish you like etc. You obviously don't have to go with peoples suggestions, but often you'll find people are naming fish you've not heard of which is really great. I think that's how I found my kuhli loaches (someone suggested them) and I love them to bits now!
