1) Got some oxygen tablets by accident from my LFS what do these actually do as all I seem to be finding is promo material and no info that doesn't appear to of been doctored by advertising.

2) What does filter floss do? Does it act as an extra biological filter or only as mechanical filter to stop debris?

Want to make a moss wall and was thinking of putting filter floss covered by the moss so that filtration is improved and the moss has more to attach to.

1) Oxygen tablets are best used for things like transporting fish long distances, you shouldn't really have any need for them in your aquarium. Keep them around though, they may come in handy in an emergency.

2) Filter floss is normally used as a final polishing stage in filters, due it its fine pores, it will catch all the tiny pieces of gunk that get missed by your main sponges etc. It clogs pretty easily, and generally gets too clogged up to be of much use before it seeds too much as a biofilter. Really just used as mechanical filtration.

I'm not sure how well the moss wall would work like that, it's probably worth a try though. I would imagine the moss would anchor quite well. It certainly wouldn't have any filtration use though.

Would a very coarse sponge work better then perhaps I could put an aerator in the substrate directly below and behind the moss wall so that there is an upwards flow of water/air through the filter sponge. I take it not just any old sponge will do?

Oxygen tablets can be good if you have a power cut and electric going to be off for a while.

Easiest way to make a moss wall is to get a sheet of fine netting, the sort of stuff you use for protecting plants in the garden. Make sure the holes are too small for your fish to wriggle their way in. Cut a sheet twice the size of the area you want, spread out the moss over half of it then fold the other half over. Secure with fishing line. The moss will happily anchor itself to the netting.

You'll find that the moss will grow thick enough that it would trap any debris that would be trapped by the filter floss anyway. You'd have trouble getting the flow to pass 'through' the moss wall, too.
