This is absolutely horrific for both Turkiye and Syria. The areas affected are enormous, and in places quite remote without proper transport links especially now that local airports are destroyed or heavily damaged. Been watching the flight radar and already several military and civilian aircraft are doing shuttle flights to/from Istanbul, Konya, Ankara to Adana which is the closest intact airport available

Two massive quakes within hours of each other plus aftershocks.......there will be increasing tolls as the day passes.

Hopefully other countries can get their specialist teams mobilised asap.

I cannot imagine how these people are coping after such devastation, so many were asleep in their beds when the first quake hit. Horrible, horrible for them.

An extraordinary reaction by Israel who had already mobilised assistance to Turkiye.....they received a request for help from their "enemy" Syria and they have, for the very first time in their history, are sending assistance to Syrian towns and cities that have been devastated.

Bulgaria and Azerbaijan have already sent in teams and resources as have the Turks. The UK and 10 member states of the EU are boarding aircraft with rescue teams and resources as are Russia, Ukraine, US, Iran, Iraq and every government is doing its part to help both Turkiye and Syria, regardless of their relationship.

To see total enemy nations coming together to work side by side in this way is amazing......its awesome to see "enemy" nations coming together but its sad that it takes a natural disaster for it to happen.

That is a pretty impressive thing to read - could be a world changing moment.

I saw it in the news. Horrifying... Well, our country has send a rescue team with dogs to Turkey to search for people who may be stuck under those destroyed houses.

A third quake has hit this morning...5.8.

Three quakes (7.8, 7.5 & 5.8), three epicenters all clustered in the same area of Turkiye & Syria, plus aftershocks.

Upwards of 5000 killed and increasing by the hour. Not helped by a massive snowstorm that has hit the area hard.

There have been cluster quakes before in various regions of the world but these three are some of the highest magnitude on record for the region. There have also been seismic changes at Etna, Stromboli, Gran Cratere della Fossa and even Versuvius...the epicenters share the same fault lines as the volcanoes in Italy.

Several countries have sent in specialist SAR teams, including dog teams, along with structural engineers and heavy equipment to assist with finding both survivors and recovery of the dead. Technology such as heat seeking equipment is now on the ground and teams are systematically searching the wrecked buildings....with the ever present danger of aftershocks and new quakes.

Turkiye and Syria are going to need all the assistance available to find those trapped under buildings and for many months ahead once the quake cluster finally stops. Humanitarian and reconstruction aid will be required for many many months.

Mother Nature can be a cruel beast at times.

That newborn baby girl though, such a miracle!
That little girl is the last surviving member of her family. Poor little mite, I can't imagine the conversations she will have as she grows up in years to come and starts asking where her mummy and daddy are.

The other image that gets to me is the father holding his daughter's hand in the rubble....her hand is the only recogniseable part of her left, she is crushed under the rubble. He wouldn't leave her side and was talking to her throughout "Daddy's here"

These enormous tragedies always seem to happen to the poorer regions of the world. Its just so sad to see people desperately trying to find their loved ones with their bare hands, knowing that there is little to no hope of succeeding.

The world has responded magnificiently to the calls for help by Turkiye and Syria....but you just know that so many families are totally shattered by what happened. How anyone can come back from that will be a miracle....the survivors and the rescuers and those who have the task of body retrieval, they will never forget the devastation or the people who have been caught up in it and who lost their lives.

A few miracles like the baby and other children saved lift the rescue workers spirits and bring a few distraught families back together, but many of those little miracles now face life alone, with no-one in their families to comfort them 😢
