Trim Veiltail Fins?

I only skimmed and may have missed somthing, but:

I saw a post from wuvmybetta that is is fine to trim Betta fins. They do not experience pain from it. It is like a hair cut. But I think I would do a little at a time as he might experience depression from the lost of his beauty and dignity???? They are vain fellows, after all.

I don't have personal experience of the fin trimming. I saw this post in the Emergency forum. You could PM wuv.

As I remember: Put him on a surface. Hold him firmly Use a sharp razor.

Using anasthetic?? Clove oil can be used to mercy kill fish. I don't know the dosages that are appropriate. PM OohFeeshy or wuv or do a search as I think OohFeeshy is suggesting.

I talked to a guy at a LFS who works on Koi when they problems with sores and he said he gives them oil of clove to knock them out a bit and yes, there is a dosage. THEN he gives an antidote to bring them out of it. He applies an antibiotic so I bought some. I only have experience using clove when I've euthanized them and then they don't exactly go right out ..
I'll also need to get a good set of small scissors for the job too and sterilize them.
I'll do some checking with wuv too. .. Not for sure I'm going to do this. It's just hard to see him struggling along. His fins were all nipped to shreds when I took him as a rescue. They've always been wavy at the ends since then but they did grow out into the most long flowing beautiful things which doesn't serve him well at this point!
Thanks alot everyone.

Have you done as liz2 does, lower the water, give comfortable resting spots--mine have loved soft algae beds at the top when they aren't well.

how is he?

This reminds me of my zebra finches. I have 3 left used to have 8 had them 7 years now. One of the little girls is really tatty, I am always trimming her beak and nails. She looks really bedraggled, and has a lump underneath not egg bound just a growth I think. I looked at her the other day and thought about taking her to vets to be pts. Then I thought about it she still eats, has a bath and sits with the other 2. I have put her a perch about one inch from the floor and she roosts on that. I really think taking her to vets would be so traumatic she would be dead by time I got her there. So just try to make her as comfie as possible.

Sorry totally off topic....see how my brain works its like a mind map with branches going off everywhere...

....And if people had also looked properly they would realise it's oft used to sedate puffers that require dentistry.
Someone needs an attitude change  Theres no need to get snappy.

Or perhaps people are simply upset at having it pointed out that they're giving out information that isn't right...

I think I read somewhere that some people can trim Betta tails but I would imagine that being to big for an older betta with a tumor. I know truly nothing about it though.

Sorry but i couldnt let this pass, since when are fish vain? certainly bettas which were originally (if we can think back that far :p ) short tailed fish, it is humans that have bred them for all the "pretty long tails", i dont think they would miss the tails very much.

I think depression is the wrong term to use, because i dont think fish really experience depression in the sense we see it. They experience stress but thats about it.

are bettas actually vain?

Of course not. Fish cant be vain, certainly not fish that were bred for their long fins and never had them naturally.

Someone needs an attitude change Theres no need to get snappy.

Drew

Well considering you reacted "snappily" to another poster who gave sound advice like they were crazy then i think it would cause some people to get a bit angry.

Especially since you suggested the advice was checked but didnt think to check your own advice.

  Ok guys,
I said to check me and I think they use it as euthanasia. I didnt ask for your patronising tone. ooh feeshy. Geo7x it will all be ok I promise, try not to lose much sleep tonight. I forgive you already.

I have had Betta go into a state that matched the symptoms of depression. The fish was diagnosed by Wilder. I treated it like depression and the fish changed his behavior.

Vain and depression are just words to describe Betta behaviors.

This reminds me of the time I described the Betta wiggle dance for food, and a noob told me that Betta don't do that, because they had never seen theirs do it. And then called me an unpleasant name. Guess who was determined to be ignorant about Betta?

Emotions are caused by chemicals in the brain. Fish have brains. It is no different than saying they get stressed.

I would agree with you if it was an elaborate thought process about life and death and future progeny that was being mapped out as pertaining to Betta. But fish have emotions (fear, stress, anxiety, interest, boredom....)

An emotion by any other name looks the same.

Liz2: Yor analagy is totally on topic!

Yes, FTB, fish tails can be trimmed.
