I came home from work yesterday to find every fish im my tank dead and the heat coming from it was unreal. I think my heater went into overdrive or something as the water was near boiling and some of the fish had even exploded. Has this ever happened anyone else? Or does anyone else know what could have happened

Ouch!!... This is terrible and I know exactly what you're talking about.... I once boiled out 4 Fire newts when it happened to me...

The thermostat of the heater fused and it failed to release when the water got warm.... It is aggonising and since then, I decided to go for the most expensive heaters that money could (afford)....

Heaters are the commodity that the price determines the quality... If I find a heater of 100w at 50$, and another of the same wattage at 100$... I'll buy the latter and feel more secure. Do not blame yourself for this... it is a malfunction of your heater that caused it, but in future.... be sure to buy only reknowned brands.

No way, gutted for you! I can't say I've ever heard of this before...

I opted for external heaters with my main tank, I just hope this can't happen with them...

that sucks, sorry to hear it. as ludwig said its not your fault though

it was disgusting cleaning it out. i have a smaller second tank that will keep me interested but at the moment i will not be setting that tank up again lost some beautiful fish and had some of them for over 2 years

I'm sorry this happened to you, and this is freakin' SCARY! I have never heard of that happening before.

it was a fish r fun one iv had a very busy weekend but plan on contacting them today

i had 7 gold barbs 3 of which iv had for 2 years, a pleco for 3 years, 2 shrimp one was 3 years, 3 fully grown yoyo loaches, a zebra loach, a bumble bee catfish,7 danios one of which was near 4 inches long , a very unusual livebearer that il probably never be able get again and a few swords, mollies, platies

Formal complaint, all the way! If they do not listen, then I would be inclined to contact an ombudsman regarding this. You should get some compensation for that, it's not right at all. And those poor fish, bigs hugs to you xxxxxx

Thats a lot of nice fish,r.i.p. The fishes, make sure u get that manufacturer of the heater

Just emailed expressing my anger there a hong kong company and im in ireland but at least they have a europe service line

Hi,so sorry to hear for your loss. How old was your heater? The ones most likely to fail are brand new ones or very old ones.

The only heaters I trust are Visitherm. I 'd never buy any other brand as I've heard lots of horror stories. They've been voted best heaters several years' running by PFK magazine. They're very accurate and reliable. They're usually dearer than other makes but I've just ordered a 150w one for £11.99 brand new from an Ebay seller.

i emailed them and they got back to me just asking more questions so i think im in for a game of cat and mouse. the heater was around 18months old and was €21 to buy so not too cheap and cheaper than your ebay one

Stand up to them and insist on at least a new heater. I doubt you'll get anything for your fish tbh. Wrong I know but even the guarantees don't allow for livestock. Visitherm that I recommend are guaranteed 5 years but again, not for fish.
