hi all,

i just read a short review in PFK that recommends Tingley Tropicals as a fantastic shop with a great cichlid selection and some rare L numbers, now i just phoned them to see what they had in stock but the women was pretty clueless. Has anybody been there and would you recommend that i pay a visit as i'm always on the look out for rarer fish?

many thanks,
jonny.

yeah it's a mom and pop type shop. i think the mom doesn't know much but the pop does!

been there a few times although admittedly not that recently.

excellent stock in their speciality fields, but i've found the shop a bit varied. only been a few times, sometimes it's seemed brilliant, everything clean and healthy looking other times it's seemed a bit dodgy.

got a beautiful big RTC in there as well, needs a bigger tank really but they do know that and have given it as much space as they could manage in a relatively small shop.

worth a visit to I'd say.

good stuff cheers msW, it was the mom i spoke to :) They re stock on mondays so i will pay them a visit on tuesday.

update this thread when you've been will you, keep meaning to call bakc in but haven't got round to it, be interested to see what they're like at the moment. :good:

really?

it's a massive place but it's had a lot of problems,

they've been shut down a couple of times now, think by the rspca, opened up under a different name but same owner and staff..... nothing changes!

i've been in before and seen them fish out dead fish and sell them to people saying 'they're just nocturnal' and i've seen an angelfish with HITH so bad that half it's head had rotted away still for sale, no quarantine or anything, in with healthy fish.

once (way back when i'd first started out) i bought a pair of angels from there and didn't quanarantine them myself, within 2 days a bacterial infection had wiped out my whole tank and i've heard similar stories from other people who have bought there.

they have fantastic stockists because they get all sorts of wonderful things but they don't seem to be able to care for them as there are always lots of ill/dead fish in there.

as you can imagine with these experiences i've stopped shopping there, left there in tears once seeing the state of the tanks, so i've not been in for a few years, i'd be very pleased if they have sorted things out but I'd urge extreme caution over shopping there.

yeah true but if you do get it from there find the healthy ones

their tanks aren't all seperate though, they're interconnected so diseases will spread from one to another. so i wouldn't recommend buying anything from them because a fish may be outwardly healthy but just in the incubation period waiting for the disease to strike.

hope you don't think i'm being too nosey/pushy, not spotted you on the forum before, had a look through your posts and you seem to report quite a few lost fish with mysterious illnesses...... i'd suggest you might have a bit more luck if you change fish shops.

Miss Wiggle seems switched on.

I wouldnt go anywhere near the Armley shop. Yes its true they get some different species in plus some of the larger cichlids but the place looks like a fish hospital but nobody seems interested in heeling the fish.

The old boy at Tingley Tropical is called George, he may seem a bit odd at first but he's ok when you get to know him. He gets some nice wild african cichlids and you cant complain about the prices.

If your willing to travel its also worth checking out Calder Aquatics in Sowerby Bridge, they have a good range of fish and know how to look after them. The prices are a tad high but you can usually knock them down on the price.

The Armley pet shop is BAD news. They havn't got a clue what they're talking about the staff, and when you do ask a genuine question about the fish they become very defensive and hostile.

Also, I was sold a 'Lamprologus Brichardi' from them, I asked if they'd been bred in Hard water as they're natively from Lake Tanganyika to which he replied 'No, none of the fish here are in anything special except the marine fish' and this included Malawi.

They looked ill to say the least, I did my bit by buying a couple anyway and got them into good health.

A question about the Tingley shop for anyone...

Do they sell Tanganikyans?

Yes mate they do, but the stock differs from time to time.

I forgot to say that they try and stock loads of Wild and F1's but you dont pay over the odds for them. I got a 12" Fontosa for £30 !!! I'd seen them else where for £150 (not wild or F1)

The only thing id recommend is that you ring them first if your travelling a distance, they open very dodgy hours. I usually drop in when i work in the area and dont go out of my way.

From memory i think they shut wednesdays and usually open about half one other days ( might have changed now tho ).

Im planning to call in tomorrow when im in the area again.

Fantastic fish stock and some real odballs and rareaties. The place in Leeds for Malawis :good: Worth a look deffinately. This said, the "pop" could do with working on his customer service skills. When I called, he was more interested in his crossword than a potential £50 sale I might have done with him for an L number plec that caught my eye...

Used to be called Living world. Most Leeds folk with any pets refur to them under one of the following aliuses; Living Death, Dieing World or "not so" Living world, along with a handful of others....

Good selection of fish, but clueless staff and most livestock is in a poor state of health. There is UV fitted to the systems, but the disease rate tells you they aren't properly maintained (my supervisor at work designed and installed their set-up. He left a few years after set-up and they haven't realy have a good rep since...)

A word of warning though Miss Wiggle. There is a memeber on here that PM's death threats to those that slate Living World. Apparently, the manager is going to stomp my head in next time I call. I would love to know how he intends to do this when he desn't know who I am or what I look like...

All the best

Ah Tingley Trops.
I visited that shop quite a niumber of times back in the late eighties and ninties,
Always had a fabulous cichlid section especially Julidochromis sp. (one of my pet projects back then)
Good to see it's still alive and kickin, these stores are increasingly hard to come by these days, giving way to the supermarket pet epouriums.
Long Live Tingley
Armley was no comparison
Regards
BigC

Can I just confirm, is this Tingley shop- off the ring road, going towards Killingbeck?

Or do I have a different shop in mind!?
