I bought two 3 spot gouramis the on sunday (one male one female) and the male does nothing but ram, nip and scare the female. I came home today and noticed that the female has damaged some of her scales above her eye probably from trying to get away from the male....

Will he do this if i added other medium to large size fish?? cause he takes no notice of my gold barbs...

What should i do?

Should i isolate the male for a while? Or if i re-indroduce him after isolation will he just go back to his old ways???
Im worried he is going to chase the female to death

Is two females better than a male and a female???

Thanks everyone who replies

i would say get another female - two females would deflect the bullying from the male...but this depends on the size tank you have available.

you could also try bagging up both fish; leaving them floating in the tank but releasing the weaker female first -so the male see's the tank as her territory - works with bettas

but im no expert, goodl uck :good:

Hmm yeh that sounds like an idea, i was thinking of putting the male in one of those fry containers and letting the female swim freely for a day or two, to get her confidence up and to let her feed without being attacked. And to also punish the male a bit, might sound harsh but if i leave things the way they are he wil kell her for sure.

How big is your tank? Do you have another one so you can split them up?

i had two, then introduced 2 more, they pretty much ignore the others now, it was 2 golden gouramis i had bullying between, but 1 died recently so end of that, i also find that the 3 spots love to sit on the gravel under half a terracotta flower pot- they all have a go at some point in the day, maybe for a bit of peace and quiet??
