Thought Experiment -- Horse Poo

Having read many topics and posts on the fish-in/fish-out cycling, bacteria build-up et al. I have been having a thought that I might try to put into practice. A tank of new water, a new filter -- just a small one -- and a small dollop of fresh horse dung! It has ammonia, active bacteria and it's already wet. Daily checks and no water chamge and see what has happened after, say, two weeks.

I shall start this weekend subject to a horse crapping outside my house (a common event!).

There'll be no fish going in, this is purely a biochemical experiment, I wouldn't want to risk parasites or other toxins that were totally alien to fish.

you would want something to compare the results to as well... like 2 more tanks set up one with nothing 1 with bottled ammonia

Quite a few fish books say to use rabbit droppings as fertilser for plants in the tank (comes pre pelletised ), so I wonder if you could get the same effect with using fresh rabbit pebbles. An interesting experiement and don't forget the fish in Africa that feed off the Hippo crap.

I've heard that a lot of baby animals have to eat their mothers crap(eg Koalas, rhinos, elephants just to name a few) so a bacteria colony can establish in their stomachs. If they don't get this first in gestation of bacteria then they die from all sorts of ailments. Just a bit of trivia.......it will be interesting to see how you go Baccus with your experiment.

People have tried this before, some people have tried or suggested using human waste as well but you have no way of knowing exactly that this waste is 100% safe for the fish and can lead to other problems later on.

With horses my main concern would be things like fertilizers and pesticides.
