Last night, I'm working on my computer and my betta, who was in a tank right next to me, started making these sounds (vocal sounds) like I've never heard before. I looked over at the tank and Smokey was squirming around so I got up and walked over and then he acted all happy to see me, so I talked to him, and then went and got him something to eat. I hadn't fed him yet and had skipped the day before, so I don't know if he was hungry and trying to get my attention or what, but this was really strange. He was fine when I fed him, and no more noises after that, but I couldn't find anything on line and was just wondering if anyone else has ever heard of this?

OMG im going to have to see the "talking" betta hehe
sounds like all is normal!
bt sooooo cool!

Here's Smokey . . . but this picture is about two years old and not a very good one at that. He has a beautiful tail which you can't see, sorry . . . but my computer crashed a couple months ago and I lost all my pictures and had to get this one from DH.

He's a real survivor too! I've almost lost him a couple of times. Once, he became so terribly sick, and I nursed him back to health. I was so worried about my little guy. I was literally forcing shrimp down him to keep him alive. He's always let me pet him and he loves to eat chicken too! Whenever we'd have chicken breasts, I'd give him a little bite. He just loves chicken.

When we moved to Florida, his container was knocked over and all the water spilled out. When we found him, he was lifeless. I was drinking a bottle of water and poured what little I had left on him. He just laid there, but I kept petting him and finally he started moving again. I was out in the middle of nowhere at the time, but just as soon as I could, I got more water for him, and he survived that ordeal as well.

The sound that Smokey made was not a clicking noise nor did it come from another part of his body. This noise came from inside of him and reminded me more of the sound a dolphin would make but didn't have that shrill loud pitch to it. I really don't know how to explain it because it was like nothing I've ever heard before. I don't know about this little guy? I've been pretty sick here lately myself, so maybe he thinks he better speak up for himself so I don't forget to feed him . . . lol.

its it like a croaky squeltchy noise? ive heard this alot, especialy when they are feeding
and sometimes when they come up to breath

i'm not sure about everyone . . .

but this is what i normally hear since my bettas are right next to me . . .

when they take a breath, it's a little popping sound . . .

then when they do random things like nip at the corners, it's like a little click-ish
