and how come we british are near as dammit the only fools to drive on the left then?!?! is it something to do with americans being cooler than us so other countries copied them?!
americans drive on the right because we are awesome. other countries copy us because we didnt try to take over most of their countries at one point in history. they are still scared of you guys and your redcoats.

i think that's the point skylar is trying to make... that a 20g tank isn't even big enough for one goldfish to live in for its whole life, so why start with one? it really is the same principle as with oscars. you better love that sort of fish, because you won't be able to keep much else with it!
goldfish grow up to 16"....

now tell that to every person who has a goldfish in anything less than a pond.

I don't know about 16" but goldfish do get pretty big (some of the ones i recently saw were at least 8") and if they don't have the space to thrive then they'll just die. simple.

I house sat a few weeks ago, and they had a fish tank.

Three fancy goldfish, huge big round things (dont know variety, not big on goldfish) and they were in this mini tank with an air tube leading to an air stone, fake gravel, fake plants, and evaporation had lowered the water mark to ATLEAST 50%. SOOOO, i did a top up so it was at max, then left a kind little note about keeping goldfish.....not rude, it was nice and polite :)

i'm so proud of you!! now that's the sort of thing that really ticks me off... just blatant disregard for the fish...

I kind of "inherited" a goldfish and 20 gallon tank a couple of years ago. The poor thing couldn't hardly turn around in this tank, so I moved it to an empty 55 I had. By last summer, it was too big for the 55. At this point, I was seriously considering building an indoor pond for it. Was talking to the guys at my LFS, they knew of a guy who had a 4,000 gallon outdoor pond who would definitely be interested in it, so I took my goldy to the LFS and traded him in. (Much easier than building a pond ;) ) Within a couple of days, the pond guy had stopped in and my cramped goldy had a new 4,000 gallon home.

Wouldn't it be nice if all goldfish stories ended this way? This fish was between 14 and 15 inches when I traded him in. I would love to see how big he is now.

Seriously...don't believe the "they grow very slowly" stories. These fish love to eat. You had better have an awesome filtration system, too, and don't even think about skimping on your water changes! IMO, goldfish are a lot more work than most tropicals.

urghhh man thats disgusting.. but its not as bad as a betta in a bag idea that was goin round last yr

my daughters school must be realy into the fish keeping thing because they have a 4ft tank... its only got 3 goldfish in it... ok the water needs changing.. and the gravel could sure do with a vacum... but that have put a huge sighn next to it sayin 'please dont tap on this fish tank, you will scare the fish we dont want deaths do u?' then it has information next to it about goldfish... the only thing is they say 10gals for the first one and 5 gals for each one after.... i soon corrected it on the parents evening... they now have it updated an nice an clean ;)

Hahaha... what hypocrites Petsmart are. They sell tiny goldfish bowls, but to quote form their website...

Aquarium
Fancy goldfish need a large aquarium. Minimum aquarium size for two adult goldfish should be 29 gallons.

walmart sells bettas in a little cup - which I guess isn't too bad since all of their other fish are crammed in 10G's... I've seen that at normal LFS's though.

But they also sell these little quart-pint size cups for bettas... I always thought that meant bettas liked that... until I came here anyway.
