Hi, I've got a 40ukg tank (180l) with 3 cories and a plec (and angelfish atm which we are considering rehoming) so my questions are, would my current stocking be suitable for a mbuna tank? (ovbiously without the angels) and how many would I be able to have? I particularly like the yellow labs, but would like maybe 3 different species if possible, with a good colour range.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks :)

The cories would not be suitable, the plec? well yes probably, but it's grow way to big.. best shift all the existing fish and start afreash in my opinion..

In your 180L tank (i presume its either a vision or a rio right?) you could have 4/5 yellow labs, 3/4 Hongis and something like 4 rusties..

fairly peaceful setup and none will grow too big an will be pretty colourful

Hope this helps :good:

That does help alot, thank you. It is a vision, yes. The plec is a columbian zebra, max size only about 4". Can you elaborate on why the cories would not be suitable please?

The fish you've suggested sound great, and the colours are nice and varied. Are they widely available in the uk?

Thanks for your help :)

Well, several things would make cories unsuitable in an African tank. They will not adjust well to a high ph. They will not do well with aggressive fish. They are a sweet river fish that will be out and about to play and spawn and dance for you if they feel secure. They are easily terrorized into hiding. Most can do well in a community tank of non or mildly aggressive soft water fish (like tetras) but they are best in numbers with non aggressive tank mates and species only tanks.

I see BN plecs being recommended to African tanks. They are not easily intimidated, apparantly can adjust to higher ph and hard water. Perhaps your zebra would do well. Still he is a Columbian you say. Have you considered New World cichlids? Appistogrammas do well in community tanks and are a soft or neutral water fish. Most cories will co habit with Apistos. Cories are also from South America.
