hi dont know if this is the right place to put this or no !!

i am been thinking about opening up a aquatic shop in taunton or near taunton
but been told its alot of hard work getting it up and running ie money

any idea's i had a chat to one of the shops in taunton ie littlefish paul sed no not worth it i sed u doing it i think he was just saying that as i wld be doing the same i sed may not have a shop in taunton anyway

any idea's be great
was thinking abt setting up more tanks home here but not allowered lol wifes says no no room lol

In the current economical state it peobably isnt a good idea m8, yes it is alot of hard work and you will probably no profit in it for the first couple of years and more than likely lose money in the first year

was going to do it at home when we move have a fish room

then when got a pet license i can import all over the world or just from a wholesaler

I think you're looking at around £1000 a 9 tank system w/ sump. Plus you gotta think about water storage (RO), and whether to stock marines, or sell plants etc. Lots of start up costs but if you get set up and running without any big problems there are still a lot of customers out there willing to shop around.

I know here in the States now is not a good time to start any kind of shop. Wait till the market comes back. I'm not sure how bad off you guys are in the UK, but things are starting to look up.

Please dont be put off by people, if you have a dream to do something, work out a way to do it

If you have some funds & are able to start small & slowly expand, its not unrealisitc.

We found a new small lfs here at the weekend, it was in their house, i'm sure you have to contact council, get new insurances etc to do something like this, but its a good starting point & not too expensive. Unfortunately this place was not well kept & there were lots of dying & dead fish, but if it had been kept well it could have been a good little business.
These people also offer a set up service, where they order, install, cycle & then do a weekly maintenance on tanks.

We have to be careful these days when starting business, only put into it what you can afford to loose or can recoup from equipment sales on closure & start small.

I started mine in October last year, everyone thought I was mad, but it has done really well & I now have a steady income, people are turning more to spending money on their home environments instead of nights out, so anything aimed at home comforts is a good thing right now.

we have a small local shop called billy the fish


he has a unit on an industrial estate and seems to be doing well also he know what he is talking about and i have yet to see a dead fish in one of his tanks

he likes his fish an has 3/4 display tanks in the unit which he will never sell and also are kept clean and the fish are in really good condition

it is hard but it should be rewarding if done the right way

Marine tropical fish shop for forsale/lease in cardiff FREE RENT its around 80 miles from me
hes been trying to sell that shop for the last 2years on ebay as i email him bk then and again last mouth he has now sold 30 of the tanks on ebay




taunton theres 4 in town and two out side of taunton

was i think one has closed as it seen it open for abt 3wks he was more Expensive then all the other shops

i live in taunton was thinking abt it,
i have got fish importers list and got dry goods list of importers and Dry goods wholesalers,all part from one importer i dont need to show them my license

the Pet Shop License is 75.00 pounds for one year
i could just used this for home business as couple of my mates imports from couple places and they sed just do it from home
but the think is we live in a 2bed flat with two kids
when we move sometime this year or next year we have a 3bed house i have already got the tanks (15tanks )to start a fish room
and will be selling of some of my fish to make room for new stock from the importer already got a list of fish i am buying mim order is 400 pounds plus 19% vat on top free shipping
this will happen in the next couple wks
at the moment i am abt 200 pounds sort of buying the fish i am going to be buying from them.

I think the single two most important things that will carry you far in this business is knowledge and customer service skills.

You need to seriously look at how you are approaching this too - walking into a fish store and asking if he thinks there is room for a competing business is not the best of ideas. You would have been far better getting to know him, building up some trust and then getting all nosy about how it all works etc..

Not sure how it works with animal shops but you have potentially given him the edge and so once he hears rumors he will take things a LOT more seriously than he otherwise would have. Business ain't always friendly I'm afraid.

Also you will need to really turn on the charm with your bank manager if you are to get any money out of him

Apart from that get do loads of homework and go for it if you are really serious - could be the best thing you ever did with your life!

i am good friends with the shop owner as he has my fry bns from me offen and ask him how hard is it to set up a shop like his he sed hard i sed wasnt thinking abt setting one up in taunton lol
but else where he sed theres not lot in it really best staying where u are and sell to us and ebay and that then go from there
paul is ok he sed hes been doing it for abt 15years now moved shop twice just three of them run it him and hes brother and there wife or something

The same ad is on ebay, apparently it would be the biggest Aquarium Shop in the UK, it would probably cost a fortune to stock though.

yes thats right i did email him last year abt it and again this year but he has sold some of the tanks as he sold i think if i remember around 30 tanks for 200-300 pounds

wld be great but little bit to much and i have no car as i dont drive



35 thousands pounds he wants it for good price seeing it cost a lot more

the bloke its really good i went to see him last year when i wanted to start my own shop

that shop on ebay for sale is only the lease 40.000 ayear (i think) but there is no floor space for dry goods
