So ive had my tank set at 24C since ive had the tank and ive just got my rams so with a few helpful members on here i have uped the temp on the heater to 26C but this is my issue the thermometer is still reading 24 :S I upped it about 2 hours ago. Will it take ex amount of time to show me the new reading or is my thermometer broken and needs replacing?

The heater light came on when i uped the temp so im guessing that is ok.

Give it time. I would up the heater a little more and re-assess it in the morning. Heaters rarely achieve the temperature you set them at. :good:

is thermometer internal or is it stuck to the outside of the tank ? how big is your tank in litres or gallons ??

Its stuck to the inside of the tank by a suction pad its one of these

Ive upped it to 26C so will check in the morning and try work it out from there. Worse case for the price of them ill pop to my LFS and get another.

It is in the oppisite corner of the tank from the heater. its a 64L tank and the base is 60cm x 32cm from memory

I've had a couple of those thermometers but like most cheap aquarium thermometers non of them are particularly accurate. If you compare them all in the shop they can be + - 2c from each other. Like others have said the heaters are not accurate either. I would be careful as the first tank I setup the heater was out by 5c and was keeping the tank around 30c before I relised. no fish at the time luckily.

I had a crappy thermometer that was a whole three degrees celsius out - enough to make a significant difference. I got a similar looking one of a different brand and it's spot on. If you can get hold of a photographic thermometer that is absolutely ideal for calibrating the real temperature of your tank and checking the accuracy of your other thermometers. They have a massive scale and are accurate to about 0.25 degrees celsius. You can't leave them in the tank though!
