Hi everyone,

I bought a male betta fish about a year ago, and he has been very healthy up until this morning. I walked into my room and noticed he was laying there, listless. (Had been kinda listless and not so hungry for a few days.) He was pointed downhill and the area underneath his gills looked swollen. I decided to change his water immediately. I took him out of the tank, cleaned it all, put in the chlorine treatment, and put him in the tank. He usually loves getting into his slightly warmer tank of water. As soon as he hit the water he went nuts, darting all over into the bottom, the sides, etc. For a second he calmed down and I saw this brown bulge coming out from between his lil side fins (near the gills.) I called my roommate over to see, and within the next five seconds the brown thing came all the way out of him. He darted once to the left, rolled onto his back, darted back and forth once more on his back and then just died. He went face down to the bottom. The thing that came out of him looked like a U but...it was all curled up. I tried to fish it out with a spoon but it disintegrated immediately.

I was really disturbed by what happened to my lil guy and have NO Idea what this could be. Any ideas?

Maybe it was a parasite, and the water change threw it into shock? Strange it disintegrated.
I forgot to say, the bulge was in the middle of his chest, and thats where the stuff came out of. After it came out, there was no bulge. You don't think it was his internal organs do you? He was darting a tad bit before the water change. But it really got bad when it started coming out of his chest.

maybe the water was a little too warm for him, i've seen that reaction to too hot of water, as for the brown thing, no idea
