Um yeah - as I said we USED to do that. lol
I'm quite certain that the pretzels and potato chips weren't exactly healthy for them either.

heh

Good God that's a lot of fish!

I know this is a little off-topic, but when I lived in Hawai'a as a kid, we used to feed fish in Hanama Bay (it's against the rules now). We would bring frozen veggies with us to the beach, and stick a handful underwater. The fish would come ans eat it right from our hands. I think years of this caused the fish to be nipy at EVERYTHING that was underwater! They loved the stuff, though. We'd give them mixed vegetables that have the peas, carrots, and corn in them.

I've got fruits just waiting to toss in - apples and I"m going to get some oranges too. It was rainy and crappy here today, AND I had fishy problems and had to go out for supplies but I plan to get out there and feed them veggies soon.

Although the veggies will sink and not be as much fun for us to see but I think they'll love em! :)

The fish you thought were koi carp are actually ghost carp, a hybrid mix of the common carp and japanese koi.

Lovely pond, if i lived there i'd be out with my fishing gear every evening.

:kana:  :kewlpics:

It appears to me that who ever created the pond years ago decided to throw "a few fish" in there to give the residence something to watch or emptied there own pound when the fish grew too large.

Mother nature has a way of supplying some of our greatest pleasures.

I'm not to up to speed on the whole pond life thing but it appears to me the "large" carp-ish fish you are seeing are large tri-color comets that have pretty much grown to there maximum size, the smaller ones appear to be years of off-spring produced by the "couple" or more that may be dwelling in your pound. The "gold fish" appear to be red comets or fire comets as they are sometimes refered as. They will only grow to about 6-8 inches in length. Nice shot of the bull heads, they will "gulp" down anything that will fit in there mouths. I had an e-mail sent to me of a flat head catfish (larger cousin of the bull head) that had tried to swallow a basket ball only to have it get stuck in it's mouth and had to be popped and removed by hand by the guy who discovered the fish trying to submerge itself repeatedly and was near death from exhaustion. It was quite a site and I wouldn't have believed if I wouldn't have seen the pictures of itmyself.

I beg to differ!!

The red sea are goldfish and then the fish in the centre of the picture above the "albino" one is a sarasa comet. The albino one is just a goldfish that has turned white, you can also see quite a few that are still partcially black as they would of been last years young, and maybe the year before aswell.

thats pretty amazing!
hows about putting a pair of cons in their in the summer, and in the winter get a huge fishing net and get the thousands of cons that are left in there

note:don't mind me,i just have crazy ideas about cichlids :p

I saw that site also. I wouldn't have believed it otherwise. Poor little fishy. -_-

Like I said, nto up to speed, just took a guess. I have seen tri-color comets that large before, there is one at our local blood bank, it is around 2 1/2 feet long. The red fish look similar to red comets I had seen in a friends pond. Either way, enjoy feeding them, and I would have to say I am jealous of you for having the view you do.

Does this largwe fish at ypour bank have barbels on either side of it's mouth? if so it's a koi and i hope they have a bloody big tank to house it properly.

comets come in red and white.

goldfish tend to be 1 colour unless there changing colour or they muight have a small ammount of another colour.

as far as I'm aware koi are the only large coldwater fish that you would find in ponds that will have 3 totally different colours (or more)

So PaulMTS - on those photos that I posted way early....
what kind of fish is that huge guy - the one you can barely see?
He looks like a monster goldfish....
He's all white with various scattered spots of orange and black all over him.
he's at LEAST 2 feet long and his body width is at least 6". I haven't ever seen him from the side cuz... well... he's in a pond. lol

Some variation of carp type?
or
?

Semi related amusing story...

I was at a park which had a large pond with koi/goldfish as well as ducks and other wildlife... Well we were feeding the fish and ducks bread and one duck somehow got a plastic ring along with the bread (it was a ring such as you would find on the top of a gallon of milk, not the lid itself, but the plastic ring below the lid). He then somehow flipped it up over his head so it fit him like a ball gag.

For the next 3 hours there were 3 guys, 1 girl and a chocolate lab chasing a duck all over a pond trying to help him out. It took forever, was thoroughly exhausting and we were drenched... but we caught the duck and removed the gag. We had to talk the girl out of trying to tag his leg so she could make sure he was healthy in the coming weeks...
