The "Walters" of our pond

Lovely fish in a nice big pond,but if I lived there and saw someone trying to catch them,I'm afraid I'd push them in,those fish belong in that pond It looks so beautiful there

err... actually, unless its a man-made body of water completely isolated from the natural waterways... those "koi" are sooooo not supposed to be in there. pr0+3c+ j0r n4tur4l 3(05y5t3m, y0!

anyways, regarding the fish ids: can we just agree that they're all coldwater carp derivatives that should really only be kept in a pond or really big tank? you guys are obsessed!

Yes, I believe it does. It is in an indoor 5000gal. pond with a walk across bridge. There are several others in there half it's size and the are great to watch as you are giving a pint of your blood, nice and relaxing.

Facinating actually, you say its a dock, well i am guessing its a inland dock with fresh water, since those are all, afterall fresh water fish, but what suprises me, you say the koui dont get close to you, yet those are fairly large koi, and koi, when well established with it surrounding does get brave, because heck koi are the smartest fish around, proven fact, so if you spend hours there, i am suprised the koi havent begun to take a liking to you, and come up close, because koi actually tend to like being touched and stroked...

Also in your picture with the ghost koi, you have a common carp there, not unusal, since wherever you find large open waters you will find common carp...

And with those size fish, i am supirsed that dock aint covered with fisherman, is it private land?

(please note i am a fisherman myself, was one of my most favorite sports until i got half blinded in a fishing accident)

Next time, throw them abit of sweetcorn, it there is one thing i know about koi and the larger spieces of carp, they really LOVE sweetcorn

Well..... the "dock" itself is probably only about 7 feet long and 5 feet wide. It's very small and goes out over the pond just a little bit.
The koi will come by us to get food but they scurry away just as fast as they came. I think there are other folks (we live in an apartment complex) and little kids that always stomp on the dock and throw pinecones and rocks into the lake so they're not very trusting of people.
Very rarely we will see people fishing out here - but it's hardly ever, and once you see someone fish, they never do it again because NOTHING ever bites. I have lived here for 5 years and never seen one fish caught - and we're outside ALL of the time. I don't know if we just have smart fish or what. lol

Yep, the koi (ghost koi i'm told they are) are probably around 14 - 16 inches long and the carp are even bigger - probably approaching 2 feet long. They don't really seem too completely scared of us, but they keep their distance.

I will definitely try the sweetcorn!

Like I said before, the "GYNORMOUS" ones are Tri-Color Koi (largest of the COMET family) They can grow up to 2 - 2.5 feet in length and can live for up to 15 years or more.

I'm a vegetarian, so I don't know, but I've always been told Carp are terrible to eat because they are so bony.
