So basically it's what we call a 40 gallon breeder right?

Bronze Corys would be nice! I'd think you could fit more than 6 though.......

How about some nice Gouramis? You know I'm partial to Gouramis, and since the Corys are bottom dwellers, some nice Pearl Gouramis for the top half would work well no? A male with 2 females would look great, just saying.

Wouldn't I need a 4 footer for more than 6 bronze cories?
And I don't know for sure if they have pearl or dwarf gouramis at the shop. I'd rather go for something that can be kept in more than a trio, but not have the same colors on each individual. I like being able to tell fish apart.
Was thinking maybe a betta sorority but those would never breed being all female. And no idea if betta imbellis (doubt any on sale) could live in a larger group.

What about 5 sparkling gouramis? (1 male and 4 females) or 6 of them (2 males, 4 females)? (though they'd still be hard to tell apart -_-)

This is the problem with egg layers... most are all alike, little uniqueness in each individual. Except bettas, but their temper... pfff...

I don't see why you would, you could easily fit like 10-12 in there and even like 15 pretty easily.

why would you need 4 foot tank for such little fish?

Bronze cories? I'm not talking about the mini cories that could fit in there like in that huge amount.
I want either these:

Or, the more commonly available, albino. Or mixed if possible.

Also, adding more cories limits the number of other fish I could add.
It's so hard to find a species that fits all the following requirements:
- top or middle dweller.
- doesn't mind being in a group of its own species, or its aggressiveness is mild (swordtail level at most).
- individuals have different colors (easier to tell them apart)
- are egg layers

Only thing I can see fitting there is a betta sorority. I have no idea if there are other fish that fit the above criteria.
Only common livebearers seem to fit all but the last criteria.

I think you're giving up too easily on the Pearl G's.......there are spectacular looking fish that swim with grace. The male would be easy to tell apart from the females & to be honest I had another female before this one & I can still tell the difference from the pictures of both. Sadie, my current female has a taller body shape than Orca had.

Pearl G's also go well with Honey or Dwarf Gouramis, so in a tank that size you could have 2 or 3 of each species, depending on how many Corys you had.

On the Cory subject, I never heard that Bronze or Albino Corys (same species) require a 4 foot tank for more than 6 of them. In fact a 40 gallon breeder tank has the depth from the wall which increases it's footprint allowing for a minimum of 8 if not 10. Again, I wouldn't put 10 Bronze Corys in with 3 Pearls & 3 Honeys but a pair of Pearls, a pair of Honeys or Dwarf G's along with 8 Bronze would be a nice stocking in my most humble opinion.

Waiting for someone to say that tank would be grossly overstocked using the ridiculously lame 1 inch per gallon rule...........

Even then:

8 Bronze or Albino = 24 inches (based on 3" per fish)
2 Pearl G's = 8 inches (based on 4" per fish)
2 Honeys = 6 inches (Based on 3" per fish)

for a total of 38 inches in a 40 gallon tank

OR

6 Bronze or Albino = 18 inches
3 Pearl G's = 12 inches
3 Honeys = 9 inches

for a total of 38 inches in a 40 gallon tank

Hardly an overstocked tank if you have good filtration & some live plants

Just got back! Only 2 dead fishes, 1 that committed scuicide, the platy in my Betta tank, and 1 of the cherry barbs in my qt, the male.

Was the Cherry Barb was one of the old ones?

No, one of the new ones.

That blows. The others were old so it's more of less expected but the new ones? Too bad. I bought 6, which was 3 pair & 1 female died after 2 weeks. I replaced her with a veiltail female Cherry Barb and haven't had any losses since (that was months ago). It probably wasn't anything you did, just a weak fish. It happens. Carry on! The good news is that Cherry Barbs are cheap at Petco or Petsmart and they have the veiltail type at Petco for like a dollar or two more.

Well, I am not so sure I can find pearl gouramis or even honeys or dwarves there, I saw some white gouramis though but don't want those.
I would go with
6 Bronze or Albino
3 Pearl
3 Honeys

Or

6 Bronze or Albino
3 Pearl
3 Sparklings

But what if they don't have those types of gouramis or if only pearl or honey are available? Also, dwarf gourami seems to have more color variations.

Yeah he seemed pretty weak, I plan to get 2 males, 1 female this week hopefully today or tomorrow. But hey who knows. This female can go into the big tank around the 20th if she doesn't show any sick signs, but may put her in early because she seems five and there was no dead fish there when I bought her. I got them from petco so they've got their warranty :) too bad though. :rip: razz

I think those white ones might have been Platinum G's. I don't really like those either although I've been told they're not nearly as aggressive as the Opalines, Golds, and other 3 Spots. In fact they have a temperment closer to that of the Pearls, just not as pretty looking.

Pearls have TONS of personality, in fact so do Dwarf G's & Honeys too. Sadie will eat from my hand & the male King Leeri fights me through the glass than he runs. The Opaline is like him, she is still afraid, but the female Pearl is full of life & unafraid of me.

Stick with the Cherrys though, great fish to watch. One of my favorite. They like pairs so replace the male if you can.
