Bought a male and 3 female guppies a few weeks ago - in the LFS the males were in separate tanks from the females. Anyhow one of the females that I purchased was heavily pregnant, so did not know as to whom the father was.

The female in question has just dropped her fry a few days ago and they are now in a breeding net - all the fry are currently a dull grey colour so nothing unusual there. One of the fry is completely golden - the fins, everything and is slighltly larger than the rest and obviously stands out like a beacon!

Is this very unusual? The last time I bred guppies was when I was 16 so do not know if the occasional oddball is nothing rare or unusual.

I think what you're referring to is what I call "blondies".... I have seperated these from the other guppies and now have a tank full of goldens (blondies)... and any "throwbacks" (to the grey variety) I find in their tank, I remove to keep the strain "pure".... They are now (re) established and very seldom have fry of other colour...The males have red tails.

(I have a photo somewhere... will find and post)

i've just had the same. bought a few guppies last week and one of them dropped straight away. I can only find 3 fry so far but two of them are a grey colour and one is purely golden atm. all the possible mothers are dark. im looking forward to seeing how this one grows up = ]

Yes these are blond's and quite common.

I prefer them personally.

Blond color varieties in guppies, endlers and even Heterandria formosa are well known but not really all that common. They are also not what you would call rare.
I can't say I would recognize a brunette Totally Tropical.
