The 5 Gallon

I've read that they are ok as singles, in addition to groups.

BTW, if you are considering a 10 gallon McCool, then that opens up Dario Dario (Scarlet Badis) as an option as well.

How neat! Thankies :)

Ooo I don't know why it didn't come to mind but you could have peacock gudgeons in a 10g as well!

The shrimp would be fine.  I'd say, species only 10-12 would be fine.   If you wanted a small bottom dweller...

Maybe drop the number to 8, and add a hara jerdoni - The Anchor Catfish/Mini Moth Catfish.
Do you mean a group of the hara jerdoni or just one? I want some one day is why I'm asking, and I thought they preferred groups according to THIS.

If you upgrade to a 10g, what about spotted blue eyes? :)
Oh, they are cute. I absolutely adore their fins! The only thing is I'd really like something with a little more color, like the chili rasboras.

The Badis has actually been on my want list forever. Oh man, I have too many options now! :)

Oh no, they are cute too. Those are definitely going on the list of possibilities. Can't say I mind though, this is my favorite part of a new tank! :) Hmmmm, I want to say my LFS has peacocks last time I went in....

Oh man, I just can't help it. I think I want to swing for a low end brackish tank for a F8 now. I've always wanted one since I started with fish and now I have the opportunity. Thank you guys so much for the ideas though, and if the puff just doesn't work out, I'm definitely coming back to all this.
This is what happens when I try to downsize and make things simple. I end up going bigger and doing something new altogether!

Well, honestly, I think a single male betta in a 5 is about as 'simple' as you can get.  Changing from that always complicates things...

My original plan was to downsize from the 55 to a simply stocked low tech ten

 So much for that plan!

Why would you want to do that?
