Just bought a tetra 400 air pump for my tank, it’s a little bigger than needed but I wanted to split the cables and have multiple small air stones as well as run an egg tumbler from it. Damn that thing is noisy. Tried placing it on a foamy sponge, holding it in the air, putting it on the solid floor… it’s unbearable in a room we are going to use for daily living. Is this normal or do I have a duff one? Anyone any experience of this model, is it just a noisy model? If so I’m sending it back so am on the lookout for suggestions of a quiet air pump to use in a 200l tank. To run the above mentioned things… probably won’t have any eggs to put in the tumbler at this rate though.

I have one . This must be one of those times when being nearly deaf is a mixed blessing because I barely hear it . I like Tetra air pumps . They are very reliable and should you need to replace a diaphragm it’s as simple as simple gets .

I’m about to highjack the thread with a question for Back in the Fold. I have a Boxtech air pump running a sponge in one of my smaller tanks. It stopped working after 13 months. I know nothing about pumps. But I opened the casing and there wasn’t even a hum. No action at all. All the connections were intact. Is it burned out and not fixable? What could be wrong? Or is it just a cheap pump with limited life?

The motor won’t make a sound . Any sound comes from the diaphragm working . Look at your diaphragm very closely . It probably has a crack in it . If not then it’s shot . Some air pumps you can’t even get a replacement diaphragm for . I’ve got a Fusion Quiet Power that’s going in the garbage because of that .

I had two of those noisy tetra air pumps, they didn't hold up well either.
bought a Fluval Q2 and never looked back. quiet and last long. after 10 years I had to order a set of baffles from amazon and it's still working well and that was 3 years ago.

I don’t think the Fluval Q2 is sold anymore.

I recommend the Danna Aqua Supreme AP-4 airpump

Was in search of a very quiet airpump. Tried out a total of 4 airpumps and in my opinion this is a fairly quiet airpump--the others I tried just didnt perform quiet at all even though they were advertised as such.

Pros:
Only draws 3.5 watts
twin metal ports
Has lots of power
seems to me to be well built---heavy weight
extremely quiet in my opinion--just a slight hum
excellent reviews on amazon
nice cord length
adjustable air flow
flexible rubber feet

cons
a bit larger than many other pumps
somewhat more expensive that other pumps with equivalent flow.
I use it in my 29 gallon tank and run 1 airstone and one large sponge filter off it. I only need to turn it up about 1/2 way and get very good output.

They also make a 7 watt model with 4 outlets
Model is AP-8 but I bet the AP-4 would suit your needs.

How long do you think the pump will last with continuous use before it burns out?

Running it at 1/2 power, I estimate my first one lasted about 14 years of continuous use till the diaphragm split. I dont see a repair kit for it. I bought a second one to replace it. It’s inexpensive enough to just buy a new one.
I rechecked and it is made in china for the US company.

An far as loudness, with control at mid level, i consider it fairly quiet. With control at max level it will be somewhat louder but not obnoxiously loud.
