Temp Change Due To Heatwave

Hi all

My tank has been at a happy 27 degrees for a while now, until we started having this glorious weather!

Yesterday i noticed that it had crept up to 28 so this morning i left the curtains closed and the window open. The tank is not in full direct sunlight but the bow front does stick out a little bit so gets a little sun.

I have just got home and noticed the temp has now crept up to 30, i have turned the heater down but it doesnt seem to be dropping.

Any other ideas you can think of to get the temp down?

I am in the exact same position! My tank is at 30 at the moment, so I have opened the windows and doors, turned the air pump on because the movement of water encourages heat loss, and taken the lid up. It doesn't seem to be dropping- and I've had problems with high temperatures for the last few weeks as the water is retaining the heat and won't seem to let it go. I guess you could also do a water change with slightly colder water in?

Yep the most simple way is to fill a fish bag with water , tie it ,put it in the freezer until its ice and the put the bag into the aquarium, it should drop the temperature about 1-2 degrees within 1 and a half hours. Repeat this until you get the temperature you want. For me the temperature than stays constant for like 3 days.

The tanks lighting will be adding quite a bit of heat particually if u have 2 or more fluorescent tubes. You can leave these off or have them on less. Leaving the tanks hood open will help dissipate the heat from the lights. Some people go to pretty extreme lengths by putting a fan above the tank and adding cold water or bagged up frozen water. 30 degrees is not that hot... depending on wwhat fish you keep so I wouldnt worry too much.

Its driving me mad!!!! I love the weather but i dont think my fish will!!!

I have done the same things as you and have turned the lights off, will just have to keep monitoring it!

I know that most of my fish wont mind it but i dont think my plec will like it too much!

remember these fish come from hot countrys...lol

but seriously if you try the frozen bag idea,remember to remove some water before adding a block of ice

Ive never had a problem, my main tanks temp goes up from 26-30c and thats on its own without heatwaves or heating,heater set at 26c...as said leave lid open but remember to cover so you get no escapee's....you should be fine, if it was a pro-longed event then maybe start to worry

lol nelly i am just worried about my plec really as i have been told to keep the temp a bit lower for him.

all the fish seem happy enough though and im not planning on trying the ice trick yet so will just keep an eye on things for now

its more natural for temps to rise in the day and drop at night if its only a couple of degrees i doubt it will do anything to any of your fish im having the same thing happen and i have bristlenose in there there totally fine

recon you will be fine, want to try and keep sub tropical fish,trying to keep the heat of these is much more fun for some, you could invest in a aqaurium chiller if you want, I Have had my channa ornatipinnis a few years now,these are sub tropicals, managed quite well during all the heat spells we have had...yes some plecs come from cooler parts of south america.but i think this will only last til friday so u will be fine, if worried turn off you heater, as long as temp stays in the green your all good, luckily for me my flat says cool in summer and warm in winter, in my senegal birchir tank and my dwarf puffer tank i never needed a heater as temp stayed up there..

yeah does'nt it make everyone more chilled and happier,its great, yeah i have one more week at work, then month of july off, then that could be it as far as works concerned, yayyyyyy...

How funny I just noticed the same thing. Thought I hadn't seen my heater come on today (atall). It's set to 24 degrees. Looked at thermometer and it's 26 degress.....so that'll be why then!

I won't worry unless it goes any higher than that.
