I wanted to post this for a heads up to everyone.

Before you go out and buy a tattooed fish you should know some things about them. Tattooing a fish can ruin their natural slime coat, which is basically their immune system. With out their slime coat they are prone to getting more diseases. These fish may not live as long as other fish and need extra care.

I am completely against tattooing fish. Its a cruel and harmful process. I would rather have a natural fish rather than a fish that has been tattooed. People get the choice to have a tattoo or not; the fish don't. If you are considering getting one of these fish, please keep this in mind.

We have all been down this road before and I doubt there is anything to learn on this topic. If it starts drifting around meaninglessly, as so many like this do, I will just close it to further comments. We each have the privilege of expressing our own opinions but this subject has been beat to death on this forum and is even the subject of pinned a topic right here.

I have some pictures of tattooed fish. I think they look pretty but it's just evil and i would rather have a healthy natural looking fish.

Uggh... watch out for tailless parrots as well. They are either bred without tails or the tails are clipped off at birth, giving their body a heart-like shape. So if you see some without tails and start feeling sorry for it, don't buy it! Didn't know people would do that until I saw them in a fish store.

Last year was around feb I went to my lfs and I thought they were really good and smart and cared about fish, until I saw a tank full oh silver baloon mollies tatooed with hearts. I spoke to a worker and told him why they were selling them there, of course I should of spoke to a manager/supervisour, but this young man was clueless. I also mentioned to him how it makes their lifespan less and prone to disease he didn't care. I try my best not to go there anymore unless i really need something the other shop don't sell.

Btw. Does anyone know of the new method using a laser it's soppose to be harmless to the fish.

I don't know of any method of injecting dye into a fish that is harmless. It may cause less damage than other methods but the only thing that I know for sure is that I will never own one. The only way that I would know to get the management's attention on something like that would be to ask for the manager, explain my distaste for the practice and then leave with nothing in my hands whatsoever. If all hobbyists did that, they would soon stop being available. My LFS already do not carry any such thing but if they ever do, there are plenty of other LFS around. I spend a considerable amount each year on my hobby, more than I really like to think about, and the LFS that I refuse to deal with will have a very real loss of income.

Oohh wow. My other lfs has parrot fish they are a dark orangy-brown colour with some specks. How do I tell if these are dyed?

We all know this anyway, and it's common sense, if you see a fish without a tail or with I love you, written on it, you're not going to buy it are you? Unless you're a chav that is.

Wow, those are awesome! I think I will fill the 135 gallon with some of those parrots. Is it true that you have to feed them Glo-fish to keep their color? If so, I can easily source those.

i agree its disgusting would you tattoo your dog?

lol, As a matter of fact, my parent's dog IS tattooed. It is on the inside of her ear. She came from the breeder that way. It is used to identify which breeder she came from as well as an easy descriptor should she ever get lost.

actually, dogs get tattooed. Certainly not for cosmetic reasons, but for identification (numbers in their ears). Thanks to the invention of the microchip it´s not that common anymore, but go back 10, 15 year and you will find a lot of tatooed dogs! Tattoed and dyed fish, beside Bettas in pintglasses  , put me off a otherwise professional looking, well known LFS.

oops, nosoup4you was faster...

Omg sick they cut the tail and top fin out, how can it swim properly. Eekkk!!
I don't think the ones at the shop here are dyed they aren't that vibrant. They are the normal pale orangy-brown colour. I want a pair but I'm afraid 29 gallons is not big enough as I read they need atleast 50 gallons. Is there an actual video of the dyed or tattooing proccess, just for informative observation of course.
