After losing my first fish today (Guppy). I decided to do a 40% water change tonight as noticed nitrate 40ppm-80ppm last night (Ammonia 0/nitrite 0))

After the change I decided to test tap water. As you can see from title, the Nitrate for the tap water is 40-80ppm

What can I add to tank to get this down? Maybe to water added to tank whilst doing water change?

Cheers

Nitrate of 40ppm is no problem at all. Neither is 80 really, but for obvious reasons not as good as 40!........why can't you be a bit more specific, is it 40 or 80?

On my API test kit the colour for 40ppm and 80ppm is not very different. It's a reddy coour. The colour of the tested water is a shade of red in between 40 & 80...

+1

You'll be fine with that, and yeah I have APi kit too, colours are so similar for 40 and 80

How about your pH Bashy? Livebearers like guppies tend to do a little better in harder water. Perhaps they are struggling a bit in soft, acid water (can't remember what yours is..) WD

My PH is quite high at 8...so don't think this was the problem...the rest of the guppies seem to be doing fine. Hopefully it stays that way

I have a PH of 8.2 & Tapwater Nitrates of 40ppm so not dissimiler to you. Also my KH & GH are off the scale nard. I have live plants in my tank & have just set up a c02 system. This will probably bring the ph & nitrites down. The plants should use the trace elements in my tapwater to bring the kh & gh down.

If nothing happens & it stays the same, then i am not bothered. as long as my ammonia & nitrites are showing 0ppm then its all gravy.
