tap water

My tap water has been known to get as high as 70ppm for nitrates(london again)
I find that I can tell if water is good or not by the way my hair feels after its been washed.lol.
On the south coast and in devon and cornwall my hair feels great.....good water.
At home,it never feels as good as when I am away........not good water.!!!
Sort of makes sense(to me at least)

Yes, another way to tell is how well you can get a lather up with soap - harder water is indicated by less bubbles. Oh, and limescale rings, obviously. Our kettle here is in dire need of a replacement, whereas my nans in Scotland is about 20 years old and looks (nearly) new!

Thats so true....I replace my kettle every 4 months or so.
Back to the shampoo subject....I use less when I am away......(I am not crazy after all.....someone understands.........lol.)

that would explain it.. i just got a new tank which came from hertfordshire which came with all these extras fluval 404 heaters etc and stuff like that, and everything is covered in limescale!! it's practially impossible to remove! think we are trying the old vinegar trick next!! :p

I find those green scouring pads work quite well too - so perhaps try using them in conjunction with the vinigar :)

Ha ha, I've pH 6.5, nitrate & phosphate unmeasurable (reads as zero) and its lovely and soft.
Rubbish if you want to keep African cichlids, brilliant if you want S.Americans...
I feel sickeningly smug now.

North of Scotland.

Can someone tell me why now and again the water goes white with millions of bubbles but slowly clears? It doesnt taste nice either.

ph 8.5
kh 10
gh 11

I haven't found anything that doesn't like this water....other than the scaly heaters maybe ;)

Nitrite 0
Ph 7.6

I have been informed recently that the water companys are putting chemicals in the water on a friday afternoon to treat the water and pipework over the weekend.

I have done ph tests on the tapwater on a Fiday night and Saturday afternoon and found that the ph has risen to 8.5 in some cases and then by Tuesday morning its back to 7.6.

So now I only do water changes between Tuesday and Friday morning.

Green Scrubbies can leave scratches but if you can find the white scrubbies they work almost as well and less scratching, particularly on glass!

yea the tank i have at the moment has LOADS of scratches on the inside.. there before we bought the tank! i always thought they were from the guy before lifting the gravel out of the tank, or from rings when the inside was cleaned.. i never realised that the green scourerers could make these scratches!

The green ones have an extra scourring agent in them. I buy sponges in ten packs that come with 5 green and five white. I get the white ones for my tanks and the wife gets the green ones for the pots and pans.
