Tanks Without Lids?

I know that people have tanks without hoods/lids or whatever. Well I can't imagine what they will look like stood here looking on at my Roma 200. Since my potential new project could involve a lidless tank i'd appreciate anyone with one to post some pics to give me an idea as to what they look like?

That would be so much help, thanks a bunch!

Heres what im thinking of. I've got a cabinet in my living room, just sat there, all depressed. I Measured it, 50 by 16 inch. Perfect for 4 footer. Like this one

Then adding this lighting system to it.

Reckon that would work?

See where you are coming from there. There are few risks associated with it, jumpers, pollution, condensation, heat loss. I feel all these can be halted with a simple condensation tray. Just see how it goes eyy?

Anyways, I'm considering Mbuna but not sure wether the 15 inch width is suited for them or not? They aren't known jumpers either are they?

If I bought a brand new external filter (F 405) for example. Hooked it up to my current 200 Litre with the filtration in at the minute (2 U4 internals) let it run for a month or so, so it cycles to some extent. Could I then remove it for my new tank without leaving to much stress on the 200 Litre? Hope that makes some sense.

the best thing to do would be to hook it up as you said then remove some of the media from the internal filters and place inside the external. this will greatly improve the external cycle as it will have already cycled media inside instead of starting from scratch. the 200L tank wont be effected as no media will be lost, just moved from 1 filter to another. dont forget that the bacteria will only grow to demand so although it will help your new filter you will still need to keep a good eye on water stats when its put on the new tank. you could also leave 1 of the sponges from the internal inside the external and replace with a new one. your old tank should be fine as its not losing much media and it will soon grow back on the new sponge and the new tank will benefit from a mature sponge and hopefully some bacteria has colonised on the new media in the new filter and will make things much easier

I had a Mbuna jump out of my 10 gallon hospital tank a few weeks ago. He was bout 2" and just sailed right out.. But that's the only incidence I've had with them in about 8 months of having my Africans.

All I have on my tanks are lights. One has a glass cover.

100 with lights sitting on top pretty much open top.

80 gal glass cover and light only.

the only fish of mine that have jumped were tetras that got spooked.
