just to add in...i use a stud finder to find them...that way i get my security deposit back lol...
 
Pulling the floor up is a bit drastic. Surely just by following the nails will tell you where the joists run and you can tell which are supporting walls from plain dividing walls just by tapping them?

you can do it that way, its just i would prefer to check the condition of the joists if i was going to put that sort of loading on them, especially if the house is a few years old. im a bit conservative when it comes to things like this as im a Civil Engineer and have worked both on site and in the design office, i've seen first hand how some houses are put together...
 
Loachman, I think you slipped a decimal. In the US the "typical" values for live load are 20 or 30 lb per square foot depending on local building codes. Live load is not necessarily moving loads. It includes the fish tank, the people, the refrigerator, beds and anything else that is not a part of the building itself. The floor tiles and the ceiling materials are not live load because they are permanently attached.
