Tank Substrate

I'm thinking I need to about making my substrate a little more realistic, I'm thinking about making a few caves for my loaches in addition to my logs for hiding.
But then I was thinking in a natural envirionment they would probably have sandy areas as well as gravel. Currently my aquarium only has small gravel.

Is it recommended to have an area of sand on top of the gravel where some fish may like to dig etc, also should I put a few large pebles in?

depending on what fish you have some don`t care what substrate you have some love sand.

mixing sand and gravel dosent work as the sand just sinks through the gravel. building some caves out of slate and adding some large rocks wil help to make it look much nicer though

I agree, Ive seen numerous people wasting there time on buying sand then pouring it over the gravel. It will just sink through the gravel and end up at the bottom. What you could do is take your fish net and net out all the gravel and replace it with sand.
