Hi All

This is my first time on here and just wanted some advice.

I had an oscar about 10 years ago called oscar he was an excellent fish full of character, sadly he died I put it down to the filteration system just been the standard one in the tank and myself not knowing enough about how messy they are.

I am looking at getting 2 oscars and wanted to know what size tank would be ok for them to fully grow i was looking at 400L and seperate filteration system for them

Any ideas

Thanks Julie

Hi' there,

IMO 400l would be too small for two oscar's unless there were in a pair , that would be pushing it still. you could always get a group of 5-6 juvi's to get youre pair then sell the rest.

I'd look at larger - 500l+ for 2 Oscars and there is no promises that it will work at all - however big a tank.

the point of this forum is to correctly advise potential owners, owners that have been given bad advice from LFS how its to be done in a more suitable way..
advice like
*correct tank size
*filtration
*diet
*life span
*breeding behaviour
*general care

20 Gallons is absoulute minium for oscars :p

Ok Joke.

Minium is - 55 gallons ( Dont screw up your nose please :p 1 oscar)

Average - 75 gallons ( Breeding pair )

125 gallons - 2-3 oscars?

Let me be the first to say welcome to our forum Jooles. I hope we have not run you off already by the bickering that I had to edit out.

I heavily edited this thread so that the original question could be answered. That person had a legitimate question that we need to try to answer. All civil help would be appreciated. I am no cichlid keeper by any means so I would be no help.

Hi Jooles, welcome to the forum!

I think a 400l tank would be okay for a pair of Oscars, if they're not a pair there will be more and more bickering as they grow older.

Alternatively an Oscar and a cichlid tankmate or 2 e.g JD, Convict and a bottom feeder would be what I would consider.

If you do go with an Oscar or indeed any large cichlids, it's suggested you should use heavy filtration.
