Tank Mates For Zebra Danios?

You could always wait till the end of your cycle and ask your lfs if they will swap the danios for something else?

I couldn't do that. I've taken the responsibility of giving them a 'home' and I wouldn't just chuck them out once they've done me the favour of cycling my tank :) . Besides, they are great little fish. They have a lovely colour (which was not at all apparent in the lfs....looked like black stripes in there) and are very, very active. I'll find some suitable tankmates for them and let that community come to its natural end before a complete change. VERY early days yet :D

Bolivian Rams are a nice addition and are ok in temps more around the 25c area....

<------ My male is in my avvy pic.

Very nice fish, what size is he? Do they need plenty of hiding places (as I read about GBRs)? Does my tank have enough to keep them (2-3?) happy?

He's fully grown and is about 7cm from nose to tail (excluding his tail extensions).

^^ The tank he is in. Though it has WAAAAY more plants in it since that last picture.

Eitherways he doesn't take any interest in hiding. Swims about like he owns the place, which as he's the largest fish in there he sorta does. Hehe.

Only thing I'd suggest is try buying a group of up to 5, allow a natural pair to form and then return the other 3. It's impossible to sex them at the size they are in your lfs. And I've found my boy wont accept any other additions. I recently bought a new ram, hopefully a female, and he's done nothing but hassle it when he sees it.. Due to all of the cover he doesn't stand a chance of catching him/her, but the point is that you really need to try and get a pair established from the beginning as I found there isn't quite enough room for 2 separate territory's in the 125.

PS. Excuse the circles. I was showing someone something.

Thing is though...you may get conflicting advice, but that's because some is correct and some isn't.
I mean there is some room for movement as fish are living animals, so you do get exceptions to the rules every now n again.

But in response to Silky's advice, his/her tank is 125l (I read through past posts), it is grossly over-stocked. Unless they have a huge canister filter then they will run into water quality issues very soon. Also unless it's heavily planted the the nitrates will sky rocket between weekly water changes.
Alot of the fish will not be comfortable in that tank long term (particularly the rainbows + plecs) and are also not being kept in the numbers they should be kept in.

AND they have a post named 'My red tailed black shark is being aggressive again'....

So my point is, think twice before readily accepting someones advice. Make sure they are a knowledgeable person by looking at their own tanks.

haha true, but i have 2 eheim external filters and one 1 fluval 3+ internal, my red tail black shark has been in my tank for 4 years now so it should be mature and i havent had problems with it as there is no other shark like fish in my tank.

Just don't even try to tell me I'm in any way in the wrong or incorrect with my comments.

You MAY have the filtration you say you have, so ok, your tank can cope with the bio-load. I take it back, you wont run into tank water quality issues in the sense of ammonia and nitrite spikes.

Everything else remains valid.
Plus I would also like to add, just because you can keep adding filters doesn't mean you can keep adding fish. In such a cramped environment you will be shortening the fishes lives due to stress.

Oh, and you're lying about the shark. Any person can find that out for themselves.

Don't give advice to others about stocking when you clearly haven't got a clue yourself.

I've seen a few posts regarding taking fish back to the lfs, is this a common practice? I find it odd that a retailer would let you buy 5 and then happily let you retun 3. Would a refund be expetced, or would you expect to pay for the 5 and just return the 'excess' once you have found a mating pair?

Quite a collection of snails in your tank! Is that a species preference or are you just grateful for the tank cleaning support?

Basically ask your lfs first. Any good shop should offer this service IMO.

And yes I do have a few...not a choice to be honest. My apple snails bred and it was the first time I'd ever seen it so thought I'd let nature take it's course...120 snails later and I still have about 40 in the tank.

I'm slowly selling them on and am removing any new egg sacs that appear.
That many apple snails isn't useful in anyones tank! Hehe.
I will be keeping the original 2 parents and a newer Golden coloured adult.

Very interesting. Not sure how the local lfs staff will manage such a request though, last time I was there one guy had real difficulty in recommending a tester kit, or even knowing what various types were for :/ . Good selection of fish in there but think I need to find myself a new one if I want any professional advice.

that is quite a breading rate!Do you donate to friends or to the lfs?

Different topic - with the Fluval Roma, have you experienced any issues with territorial fish that can see themselves in the side end two-way mirrors? I didnt know this was a feature when I bought it and was wondering if there are any fish to avoid that dont like their reflection?

I've sold alot on hear to be honest. I tried selling at a hugely discounted price to fish shops in my area but no one was interested :(

Mine doesn't have any reflective sides...but no I've had no problems with any fish seeing their reflections.

I guess it's because they aren't 100% sure of how the snails have been kept. Hypothetically they could get diseased specimens which could hurt their reputation in the long run (not that I am suggeting anything, I hope you understand :) ) This is why I also cant comprehend lfs taking back any stock that you buy from them. Obviously need to start chatting when I am in them though. I shouldnt make assumptions after only a week into this!

I think mine is the 'new' roma 125L, so maybe the 2-way glass is a new addtion to the model. Still very happy with the deal I got......£150 for the tank, stand, filter (new Fluval U3), Aqua Plus, Aqua Cycle  and Nutrafin flakes. Have not found anything, anywhere near that value!

That sounds like a good deal on a brand new tank. Well done :good:

And I don't know I think some fish shops were worried about disease and others just happened to have enough in at the moment.

Oh, and you've had the RTBS for less that 8 months...so that's two lies about the shark...

obviously you know that much about me that you havent taken a step back and realized that my brother keeps fish too, so the rtbs was his, he then moved it in with me as he wanted to buy some pagasius catfish, and they dont go well together. also, my rtbs is very calm he has set up his own territory on the far side of the tank, and all of the other fish stay away from him. oh yes, you got something else wrong as well, im not adding anymore fish as the bioload will just go skyhigh so there is something else you have wrong about me, so basically dontassume things when in the end they are not true
